Title: Facilitating the Use of Earth Science Data in Education

1
Facilitating the Use of Earth Science Data in
Education
  • Tamara Shapiro Ledley, LuAnn Dahlman
  • Carla McAuliffe, Nick HaddadCathy Manduca, Sean
    Fox
  • Robert Downs, Denise Blaha, Rita Freuder

2
Earth Science Data and Data Access and Analysis
Tools
  • Earth science data have been collected and Earth
science data access and analysis tools have been
    developed for and by scientists.
  • We want to facilitate the use of those data and
tools in communities beyond the scientific
community. Education is one of those communties

3
ESIP Federation-DLESE / NSDL Bridge
  • Federation of Earth Science Information Partners
    (ESIP Federation) about 45 organizations
charged with getting the wealth of NASAs Earth
science data out beyond the scientific community
  • http//www.esipfed.org
  • DLESE (Digital Library for Earth System
    Education) NSDL (National Science Digital
    Library) Developing a digital library
    infrastructure to deliver excellent Earth
science/STEM materials to educators and students
  • http//www.dlese.org http//www.nsdl.org

4
ESIP Federation-DLESE/NSDL Bridge
  • There is a need to bring these communities
    together for their mutual benefit.
  • Opportunities
  • ESIP Federation and DLESE Annual Meetings are
back to back in Boulder Colorado this summer
  • ESSE 21 is one of the newest ESIPs approved
    January 2003

5
What is theEarth Exploration Toolbook (EET)?
  • The EET is a collection of step-by-step examples,
called chapters, of the use of Earth system
science data and data access and analysis tools
    in an educational context.

6
Earth Exploration Toolbook
  • Chapters provide the non-expert teacher/ educator
with enough experience and in-depth knowledge of
the featured resource to be able to use it in
other contexts, and to help their students use
the resource to explore and investigate issues in
    Earth system science.

7
Types of Resources to be Included in the EET
  • Earth science datasets including gridded and
    non-gridded data and time series
  • Remotely sensed data
  • GIS tools and data
  • Image processing software
  • Spreadsheet and spreadsheet models
  • Visualization tools (graphing and plotting tools)
  • Earth system science educational web sites and
    CDs

8
Earth Exploration Toolbook
  • Chapters currently under development,
  • Structure of a chapter
  • The evolving EET template which will facilitate
the use of your Earth science data

9
EET Chapters Under Development
  • Analyzing Populations with Maps Using the U.S. -
Mexico Demographic Data Viewer CIESIN, Columbia
    University
  • Description Users describe and compare the
    geographical and socioeconomic characteristics of
selected regions within the United States.
  • Annotating Change in Satellite Images TERC
  • Description  Chapter walks users through a
    technique for documenting change in
    before-and-after sets of Landsat satellite
    images.
  • Exploring Climate Change - Complex Systems
Research Center University of New Hampshire
  • Description Students obtain annual predictions
    of temperature, precipitation, and solar
radiation between the years 2000 through 2100,
for 5 states, analyze the data for regional
variability, and compare that variability to that
    in their own state.
  •

10
EET Chapters Under Development
  • GIS Mapping and Analysis - TERC
  • Description This chapter describes the technique
of preparing "GIS-ready" data and shows how to
map that data and conduct basic analyses using a
    geographic information system (GIS).
  • Investigating the Precipitation-Streamflow
    Relationship - TERC
  • Description Web-based data and a spreadsheet are
    used to investigate streamflow, precipitation,
and the factors that influence the relationship
    between the two.

17
EET Chapter Template
  • EET chapter template being developed to
facilitate the creation of EET chapters
  • Opportunity for ESSE 21
  • Get educational modules you develop used by a
    broader community
  • Use materials developed by others in your Earth
    system science curriculum

18
DLESE Data Services
  • DLESE Data Services Workshops
  • Bring together a wide range of
  • Earth science data providers, developers of data
    access and analysis/exploration tools
  • Curriculum developers and educators
  • To ensure the data sets and data analysis tools
are accessible and usable by the educational
community, and to begin to develop educational
modules using available Earth science datasets
and data access and analysis tools

19
DLESE Data Services
  • Data Providers and Tools Developers become better
informed of Earth science data access and
analysis needs, and tool and interface usability
by teachers and students to help guide further
    development
  • Curriculum Developers and Educators become better
informed of available data and data analysis
tools to use in educational modules

20
DLESE Data Services
  • EET Template will be used during and after these
workshops to facilitate the development of EET
chapters by the curriculum developers and
educators featuring the datasets and data access
and analysis tools learned about at the workshop
  • Opportunity for ESSE 21 community to participate
    and contribute
