Dept of Anesthesia Perioperative Medicine 2009
Library Update by Brie Galloway, Anesthesia
Library Assistant
  • Introduction to the ONLINE LIBRARY CATALOGUE.
  • Only materials within Anesthesia Perioperative
Dept. libraries are displayed in the online
    catalogue.
  • Searches can be saved for future reference.
  • All three locations
  • St. Josephs Health Care
  • University Hospital
  • and Victoria Hospital
  • will have their own collections represented in
    the catalogue.

2
  • To access the
  • ONLINE LIBRARY CATALOGUE,
  • go to the UWO Dept. of Anesthesia Perioperative
    Medicine website.
  • Access the EDUCATION menu located on the
left-hand navigation panel, and scroll to
    LIBRARY.
  • The access-button for the Library Catalogue is in
the centre of LIBRARY page, followed by contact
    information for the Library Assistant
  • No log-in is required to search the catalogue!

3
  • The UWO Dept. of Anesthesia Perioperative
Medicine Library catalogue is supported using
Surpass Web Safari software. This catalogue has
been customized for the Anesthesia Library
    collections.
  • Please note that this catalogue is in no way
connected or affiliated to either Western Library
holdings and collections, or those of LHSC.
  • The Main Page of the Library Catalogue provides a
search function, and a persistent navigation menu
on the left of the screen where you can
  • Browse New Materials
  • Expand your search options
  • Review an item
  • Read recent Library news in Bulletins

4
  • Simple Search (located in the left navigation
panel), is perhaps the best option from where to
    begin your search.
  • You can search via
  • Keyword, Title, Author, or Subject.
  • If you are unsure as to where to start, a Keyword
    search is a good choice.
  • Please note that Subject searches are in
correlation with the National Library of Medicine
    Subject headings.
  • Material Type is an excellent option for
limiting your search to either a location
  • St. Josephs HC
  • University Hospital
  • Victoria Hospital
  • or by media type
  • Book
  • Multimedia kit
  • DVD Movies, etc.
  • Unless otherwise noted, all Media types
currently have a default location of UH.

5
  • Search Example
  • From either the Welcome Page or the Simple Search
screen, a Keyword search for Obstetrics
    currently returns 18 results.
  • From left to right in the results menu, checking
the Book Bag box will save that entry to the
catalogue Book Bag to be accessed later during
    your session.
  • The call number (in this case WL 704 W1865
2006), is also the shelving location for that
item. If you need assistance with National
Library of Medicine call numbers, please contact
    the Library Assistant.
  • The Type and Availability panels (along the far
right), will tell you a lot about the item its
location and the number of copies available.
  • For example, Wall and Melzacks Textbook of Pain
is located at the St. Josephs branch, and there
    is one copy available.
  • Click on the Title to read more information about
    the item.

6
  • 5. After clicking the Title of the selection, the
catalogue will display more information about
    that record.
  • The catalogue will also make further Search
    Suggestions for you.
  • Notice that along the right-hand panel, you can
access your Book Bag of saved searches, or the
original list of search results at any time.

7
  • Useful Tips
  • If you need more detail, change the detail
    option.
  • If you decide to add the item to your Bookbag,
the BookBag icon will reflect this. By clicking
again, you can remove this item at any time.
  • At this point in time, please do not concern
yourself with Holding or Reserving materials.
This requires that you Log In to the catalogue,
which essentially results in one more password
that you will need to remember. If you would like
to have an item set aside for you, please e-mail
the Library Assistant who will then Log In,
reserve it for you, and set it aside for pick-up.

8
  • Feedback, Questions Comments
  • The Surpass Web Safari software is new to the
Anesthesia Perioperative Medicine Dept. As this
software has just been launched as of 2009, there
is always room for improvement. Your feedback is
    important!
  • Records can be customized with search terms
please e-mail the Library Assistant if you have
    any suggestions.
  • Trouble-Shooting?
  • Please contact the Library Assistant
