Preparing for Chinese New Year
  • The day before Chinese New Year, Chinese people
clean their house thoroughly and put away all the
brooms, to keep the bad spirits away and the good
    spirits to stay.

3
Superstitions on Chinese New Year
  • The day before Chinese New Year, Chinese people
take a bath, because they dont bathe on Chinese
New year. They believe it keeps the good luck
    from washing away.

4
Red Envelopes
  • On Chinese New Year, Chinese parents give their
children red envelopes filled with money. These
envelopes usually have symbols on them that
symbolize luck and wealth. In Chinese, the
    envelopes are called Hong Bao.

5
Chinese Zodiac
  • Chinese zodiac are animal symbols that are used
on Chinese New Year. There are twelve of them.
They are the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon,
snake, horse, ram, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig.
Each animal represents a year. They start with
ox, and once they are finished with all the
animals, they start all over again.

6
What day is Chinese New Year on?
  • Chinese New Year is on a different day every
year. The date is determined by the lunar
calendar. Few people can read this calendar
still, because we dont really use it anymore.

7
What do people eat on Chinese New Year
  • On Chinese New Year Chinese people eat lots of
food. Some of the traditional dishes are jiao
zi, (dumplings) nian gao, (sticky rice pudding)
and noodles to represent long life. Some
families eat at midnight so they will have money
at the changing of the year.

8
The Lantern Festival
  • During Chinese New Year there is a Lantern
Festival. It is a very big celebration in China.
Everyone in China makes tons of lanterns and
    they hang them everywhere.

9
The Last Day of Chinese New Year
  • On the last day of Chinese New Year, the Chinese
people have a big parade called the Lunar New
Year Dragon Parade. It has many colorful dragons
that walk up and down the streets. People set
off firecrackers to symbolize the end of Chinese
    New Year.
