Geog 4997 Vector GIS
  • Session 1
  • Computer Science Stuffand CADGIS Introduction

2
Operating Systems
3
What is an operating system?
  • An operating system is a set of programs that
manages the resources of a computer system.
    (Resources include memory, disk space,
    peripherals, CPU, etc.)
  • The operating system is both rule-maker and
    referee.

4
Examples of operating systems
  • Windows (variants)
  • Unix (variants)
  • Linux
  • Mac OS X
  • MS-DOS
  • and others.

5
What is a user interface?
  • A user interface is the mechanism by which a user
of a computer system can communicate with its
    operating system and application programs

6
User interfaces
  • Some user interfaces are graphical by nature.
These interfaces are Graphic User Interfaces or
GUI (pronounced goo-ee). They will use pictures
and symbols for users to point and click.
  • Other user interfaces use text. When the text is
entered on lines in a typewriter fashion, the
user interface is called a command line interface.

7
Examples of Command Line Interfaces
  • DOS batch commands
  • Unix K-shell and C-shell

8
Examples of Graphics User Interfaces
  • Windows
  • MacOS Finder
  • X-Windows

9
Windows
  • Windows 3.x was a graphic user interface for DOS.
It needed DOS to operate and could not operate
    on its own.
  • Windows XP, 2003, 2000, NT, ME, 98, and 95 ARE
operating systems in their own right. They do
    not need DOS at all.
  • The term Windows can now refer to an operating
    system or user interface.

10
Windows XP
  • For this semester, the operating system will be
    Windows XP Pro.
  • The servers in CADGIS use Windows Server 2003 and
    2000
  • Windows Vista will be replacement for Windows XP
    (in the future)

11
Using Windows XP
12
Logging into Windows XP
  • Login by press CtrlAltDel keys simultaneously
  • Enter your username of PAWS ID
  • Enter your password of PAWS password
  • Change the domain to read LSU

13
The Desktop
  • Task bar with the Start Button
  • Icons (short cuts to programs and/or files)
  • Background
  • The Recycle Bin

14
The Task Bar
  • Shows programs already running

15
The Start Button
  • Gives access to programs and settings
  • Appears on one end of the task bar

16
The Mouse
  • A single click of the left button on an icon
selects the icon for some action.
  • Double clicking the left button on an icon causes
the icon to perform its default action.
  • A single click of the right button on an icon
displays a list of actions that may be applied to
    the icon.

17
The Recycle Bin
  • Files that are deleted are not removed from the
disk but are moved to the recycle bin
  • Files in the recycle bin can be restored to their
original place on the disk or moved to a new
    place
  • The recycle bin can be emptied to make space
available on a disk. At that point, the files in
    the recycle are GONE FOREVER!

18
My Computer
  • Allows you to see resources such as disk drives
    on your machine.

19
The Network Neighborhood
  • Allows you to see all machines in your domain.
  • Allows you to see other domains.

20
Settings
  • Control Panels
  • Printers
  • Task Bar

21
Printers
  • Allows a user to add or remove a printer from the
    local machine
  • Allows a user to view the status of the printers
such as the queue for use.
  • Allows a user to select a default printer for
    applications

22
Control Panel
  • Allows you to access the many features of Windows
that control how it and your computer operates.
  • Only users with administrator privileges are
allowed to change settings within the control
    panel.

23
CADGIS Printers
  • Papyrus1 is the server for the 36 plotters
  • Papyrus2 is the server for the smaller plotters
  • Changes and additions may be made to plotters as
    needed during the semester.
  • Check the CADGIS web site at http//www.cadgis.lsu
    .edufor plotting prices

continued...
24
CADGIS Printers
  • Color 36 on Papyrus1
  • large format color plotter
  • Color 08x11 and Color 11x17 on Papyrus2
  • small format color
  • bw 08x11 on Papyrus2
  • small format black and white
  • bw 36 on Papyrus1
  • large format black and white

25
Windows Explorer
  • The File Manager of Windows XP
  • Allows users to copy, delete, move, and rename
    files.
  • Allows users to create directories.
  • Allows for the mapping of disk drives.
  • Allows a user to search for files bases on name,
    date, etc.

26
Filenames on Windows XP
  • The names of files and directories on Windows can
have as many as 128 characters.
  • The characters that are allowed in the names are
letters (both upper and lower cases), digits,
    dashes, underscores, and even blanks.
  • While upper and lower case letters are allowed,
    file names are case insensitive.

continued...
27
Filenames (cont.)
  • Windows still uses file suffixes to designate the
    kind of file.
  • Suffixes are formed by a period (.) followed
generally by three characters. For example,
x.doc is a Word document file.

28
Copying and Moving of Files
  • Explorer uses the copy and paste mechanisms to
    make copies of files.
  • Explorer uses the cut and paste mechanisms to
    move files between directories.

29
Deleting Files
  • Deleted files are not removed but are moved to
    the recycle bin.
  • Files can be retrieved from the recycle bin as
long as the recycle bin has not been emptied.
  • Files can be moved from the recycle bin to
directories other than their original directories.

30
Finding Files
  • Files can be found by name, creation date, or
    even by size
  • Directories and their subdirectories can be
    searched.
  • All directories on all drives of a computer can
    be searched.

31
Mapping Network Drives
  • Drives on other machines can be mounted or mapped
as though they were located on your machine.
  • Important Drive LettersH LSU TigerBytes (50MB
    max)W Homework directoryX CADGIS data
    directoryY CADGIS Classinfo directoryZ
    users folder on CADGISuser

32
Important Directories
33
Program Directories
  • Applications and programs are found one of two
    directories
  • C\Program Files
  • C\WIN32APP (obsolete)
  • The operating system can be found in C\WINDOWS
    (or C\WINNT)

34
\Temp Directory
  • The temp directory is a place for temporary files
    to be stored.
  • Programs will create temporary files in this
    directory.
  • Users can also create files in \TEMP
  • DO NOT STORE anything of importance in the \TEMP
directory, for files there can be deleted at any
    time.

35
The CADGISusers directory
  • Each student user has a folder under
    \\lsu.edu\cadgis\users. The name of this
directory is the same as the users login which
    is the users PAWS account.
  • The computers in CADGIS automatically map My
Documents and the Z drive to the users folder
    on CADGIS users.
  • The combined size of all the files for your
CADGIS users folder is limited to 200MB.

continued...
36
The CADGISusers directory
  • Windows will not allow your to store over your
quota of 200MB. If you attempt to do so, you
will get a Drive Full error message.

37
The CADGISclassinfo directory
  • Most classes that use the CADGIS Lab have a class
    folder under \\lsu.edu\cadgis\classinfo.
  • The computers in the CADGIS Lab will map the Y
    drive to the Classinfo directory.
  • Students can read files in this directory and can
    copy files from this directory.
  • Student CAN NOT WRITE files to this directory and
CAN NOT MODIFY files in this directory.

38
The CADGISdata directory
  • Much of the spatial data of the CADGIS Lab have a
    class folder under \\lsu.edu\cadgis\data.
  • The computers in the CADGIS Lab will map the X
    drive to the data directory.
  • Students can read files in this directory and can
    copy files from this directory.
  • Student CAN NOT WRITE files to this directory and
CAN NOT MODIFY files in this directory.
  • Much of this data is the same as can be
    downloaded from Atlas at http//atlas.lsu.edu

39
The Root Directory
  • Each drive has a root directory indicated by a
single, solitary backslash (\) such as C\
  • DO NOT STORE any file directly under the root
director of drives in the CADGIS Lab. These
    files WILL BE DELETED.

40
DOS commands
  • A single DOS command can be entered from the Run
    option under the Start Button
  • Multiple DOS commands can be entered using the
Run option and typing cmd as the command.

41
Logging out
  • Press CTRLALTDEL to logout or go to the
Shutdown option under the Start Button
  • Logging out will stop all programs.
  • It is possible to lock a workstation so that
programs continue to operate while no other user
is allowed to use the workstation. DO NOT LOCK
    CADGIS workstations!
