Title: Lesson 4: Spirit Baptism and Initial Evidence

1
Lesson 4 Spirit Baptism and Initial Evidence
  • In traditional Pentecostal circles, the term
initial evidence is used concerning the
    personal experience of spiritual language
    (speaking in tongues).
  • The problem lies in the theological
  • application.

2
  • The initial evidence refers to the
  • experience of the baptism with the Holy
  • Spirit.
  • In traditional Pentecostal theology the
  • only acceptable evidence of Spirit
  • baptism is tongues.

3
  • John 31-8
  • How is a person born again (35-6)?
  • If we are born of the Spirit, as in John 36,
what dwells within us according to Romans 811?
  • How do we know we are born again? (Romans 816)

4
  • 1 Corinthians 123-11
  • What enables a person to declare, Jesus is
    Lord?
  • What do gifts (v4), ministries (v5), and works
    (v6) all have in common?
  • What are the nine gifts (manifestations v7)
    of the Spirit in VV8-10?

5
Nine gifts or manifestationsof the Spirit
  • Message of Wisdom
  • Message of Knowledge
  • Faith
  • Gifts of Healing
  • Working of Miracles
  • Prophecy
  • Discerning of spirits
  • Different kinds of tongues
  • Interpretation of tongues

6
  • How are these gifts distributed by the
  • Holy Spirit?

7
  • What is the Baptism with the Holy Spirit?
  • It may help to have an agreed upon
  • definition of what the baptism with the
  • Holy Spirit Entails.

8
  • John 129-34
  • How many baptisms are talked about in this
  • passage?
  • What is the difference between water baptism
  • and the baptism with the Holy Spirit in this
  • passage?
  • What are the different phrases used for Jesus in
  • verses 22, 24, 29?

9
  • We know Luke, the physician, wrote both
  • The gospel of Luke and Acts. What is the
  • Instruction given in both Luke 2449 and
  • Acts 14?

10
  • In His post-Resurrection teaching, Jesus
  • makes three points
  • The Holy Spirit is the person and power
  • by which assistance and ability are given
  • for saving, for sharing the life and power of
  • Gods Kingdom with others.

11
  • 2. The Holy Spirits power must be received
  • it is not an automatic experience. As surely as
  • the Holy Spirit will fill and overflow
  • (John 737-39) each who receive the Holy
  • Spirit in childlike faith.

3. When the Holy Spirit fills you, you will know
it. Jesus said it and the disciples found it true
(Acts 15 21-4).
12
  • Spirit, pneuma
  • breath, breeze, a current of air, wind,
  • spirit.
  • PNEUMA is that part of a person capable
  • of responding to God.

13
The Holy Spirit is the Third Person of
the Trinity who 1. Draws 5. Enables us 2.
Convicts 6. Understand 3. Enables 7. Pray 4.
Assures us 8. Share Christ
14
  • In Acts 1044-48 the first Gentiles came to
  • faith in Christ and the Holy Spirit fell upon
  • all who heard the Word (v44).
  • The miracle manifestation of tongues is the
  • only one that occurs more than one time as a
  • result of Holy Spirit baptism.

15
The Necessity of Unity
  • Unfortunately, the doctrine of tongues has
  • been used to divide the church. Those
  • who speak with tongues have proof.
  • Those who do not are made to feel
  • incomplete in their Christian experience
  • as a result. We must always remember
  • Jesus prayer in John 17 that we are one.
