and practice with reading and understanding
    fiction and non-fiction stories.

3
PREPARING TO READ
  • Word knowledge- The word knowledge activities
consolidate what students have learned about
reading words. The purpose for these activities
is to teach students that have strategies for
figuring out any unfamiliar words they encounter.

4
PHONICS AND FLUENCY
  • Phonics and fluency- provide review and
maintenance for students using the program across
    grade levels.
  • Blending- the heart of phonics instruction and
the key strategy students must learn to be
    successful in reading and writing

5
DICTATION AND SPELLING
  • The purpose of dictation and spelling is to teach
the students to spell words based on sounds and
spellings. Learning dictation gives students a
new strategy for reflecting on the sounds they
hear in words to help them with their own writing.

6
DECODABLE BOOKS
  • These books are designed to help students apply,
review, and reinforce their expanding knowledge
    of sound/spelling correspondences. Each story
supports instruction in phonic elements and
incorporates elements and words that have been
    learned earlier.

7
FLUENCY
  • Fluency is the effortless ability to read or
access words with seemingly little attention to
decoding. To become proficient readers who fully
understand what they read, the whole process of
decoding must be automatic as possible. Reading
and practicing decodable books helps build fluent
    readers.

8
READING AND RESPONDING
  • Vocabulary- Strong vocabulary skills are
correlated to achievement throughout school. The
purpose of vocabulary instruction is to teach
students a range of strategies for learning,
    remembering, and incorporating unknown vocabulary
words into their existing reading, writing,
    speaking, and listening vocabularies.
