Admission Requirements
  • a g Courses
  • (a) History 2 yrs. req.
  • (b) English 4 yrs. req.
  • (c) Math 3 yrs. req., 4 rec.
  • (d) Lab Science 2 yrs. req., 3 rec.
  • (e) Language other than English
  • 2 yrs. req., 3 rec.
  • (f) Visual Performing Art 1 year req.
  • (g) Elective 1 year req.

Minimum Grade
  • All classes taken to meet the a-g requirements
    must be passed with at least a C each
    semester!!!
  • The only exceptions are in math and LOTE where
    a D could be validated by a higher level course.

Social Science2 years
  • 2 Years including one year of World History,
    Cultures, or Geography and one year of US
    History or one-half year of US History and
    one-half year of American Government.
  • Note Economics doesnt count for the (a)
    requirement but it does count for the (g)
    requirement.

(b) English 4 years
  • 4 years of college prep English. At Shasta,
    our 9th and 10th grade English classes are
    considered college prep even if it doesnt say CP
    next to the class title. However 11th and 12th
    grade English classes must say CP, MCM,
    Humanities, or AP next to the title.

(c) Mathematics 3 years req., 4 rec.
  • Must include Algebra, Geometry, Alg. 2
  • May be Alg. 1A, Alg. 1B, Geo., Alg. 2
  • Students who started with Alg. 1 in 9th grade
    are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to take Pre Calculus or
    Statistics their senior year! Students who
    started in Geometry are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to
    take AP Calc. if theyre going into medicine,
    Engineering, or Const. Manag. OR if theyll be
    attending a UC campus.

(d) Laboratory Science 2years req. 3 rec.
  • NOTE Biology must be at least CP in order to
    count!
  • CSU one lab must be a physical science and the
    other must be a life science. One of the labs
    may be from the elective area (g).
  • Example Chemistry Biology CP
  • UC Both courses may be from the same area in
    science.
  • Example Chemistry and Physics OR
  • CP Biology and AP Biology
  • Both courses must be from the (d) area. No
    electives are accepted. UC strongly encourages
    students to complete 3 lab sciences!

(e) Languages other than English 2 years
req. 3 rec.
  • Must be at least 2 years of the same language!
  • Our choices at Shasta include French, Spanish,
    ASL, Mandarin Russian _at_ UPREP
  • Some colleges require 3 years of LOTE
  • before graduating from that college!

(f) Visual Performing Art 1 year
  • Must be a complete year of the same course.
  • Our choices at Shasta include Art, Ceramics,
    Drama, A Capella, Choraliers, Orchestra,
    Humanities Art, Madrigals, and Orchestra
  • We are working towards approval on Low Voice,
    High Voice, and Band I.

(g) College Prep Elective 1 year
  • College prep electives ARE NOT TA, computer
    apps., PE, Senior Life, etc.
  • At Shasta, our approved college prep electives
    are Ag. Phys. Sci., Economics, CP Phys. Earth
    Sci., and AP Psychology.
  • Additional courses in each required area also
    count as electives. Such as Pre Calc., Physics,
    Spanish III, French III., and higher level music,
    art, and choir classes.
  • We are working on approval for Honors Intro.
    Soc. Sci., and Intro. Soc. Sci.

PSAT
  • Given at Shasta in mid Oct. on a Tues. FHS and
    EHS offer on Sat.
  • Sign up in our main office with Sarah Price.
  • Price for last test was 15.00
  • The benefit of taking the PSAT is completing the
    student questionnaire then receiving information
    from colleges. This sometimes increases
    students academic motivation.
  • PSAT test scores ARE NOT released to colleges!
  • The math on the PSAT includes number and
    operation, algebra 1, geometry, statistics
    probability

  • Given on our campus in November.
  • Sign up in main office with Sarah Price. Cost
    last Nov. was 12.00.
  • Test includes English, Math, Reading, Science,
    and career interest inventory
  • Math on the PLAN includes Pre Alg., Alg. 1, and
    Geometry

  • Both ACT and SAT are administered at CVHS.
    Theyre listed under Shasta Lake City.
  • Students sign up online for the admission test(s)
    they choose to take
  • Shasta High Schools testing code is 052585
  • National statistics indicate students score the
    highest in spring of their junior year!

  • ACT 36 points possible
  • Cost 42 including writing
  • Reading, Math, Science, and optional writing
  • Not penalized for guessing
  • Based on a nationally recognized college prep
    curriculum
  • Prep for test is the PLAN!

SAT College Admission Test
  • SAT 1600 possible for calculation
  • 2400 including writing
  • Cost is 41.50 including writing
  • Critical reading, math, and writing
  • Students are penalized .25 for wrong answers.
    Guessing is discouraged!
  • Prep is PSAT which is offered in October for
    students who have completed Alg. 1.
  • College Options offers SAT prep courses or use
    the College Board publications.
  • PSAT National Scholarship Competition for
    juniors. Students ranking in top 10 of their
    class are strongly encouraged to take the PSAT in
    their junior year in order to compete for the
    scholarship!

Weighted Grades
  • Students may earn weighted grades for Advanced
    Placement courses and for Honors Chemistry.
  • In order to receive the weighted grades students
    must take the AP test and pass with at least a 2
    as well as earn a grade of a C in the class.
    Grades will be weighted at the end of the school
    year!

How to choose a college
  • Research whether or not the college has your
    major or majors
  • VISIT THE CAMPUS, preferably while classes are in
    session
  • Tour the dorms
  • Determine the activities you would enjoy while
    youre not in class the beach, snowboarding,
    city-life, etc.
  • Think about the weather, traffic, culture, and
    distance from home

  • 16 Core-Course Rule for D-1 athletes

    requirement

  • Sliding SAT/ACT minimum scores. Writing scores
    are not used!

    student athlete take the amateur questionnaire
    at end of junior year!
  • Send test scores to NCAA publishers clearing
    house. NCAA testing code is 9999!
  • Many AAU and ASA coaches are encouraging their
    players to take the PSAT or PLAN.
  • Shasta College- athletes are highly encouraged to
    register!
