necessary to engage actively in the economy,
governance, and culture of South Louisiana and
  • in the global arena. This function is fostered
in a climate that focuses upon intellectual
rigor, caring, and respect for the diverse
    cultures of the college community.
  • South Louisiana Community College was created by
act of the Louisiana Legislature in 1997 as a
    comprehensive, multi-campus, public, two-year
institution of higher education. The legislation
prescribes for the College both an academic and a
vocational component and stipulates that programs
offered by the College be developed to assure
the delivery of coordinated and articulated
educational services in each parish comprising
the primary service delivery area. The primary
service delivery area includes the parishes of
    Acadia, Evangeline, Iberia, Lafayette, St.
Landry, St. Martin, St. Mary, and Vermilion. To
fulfill its mission, South Louisiana Community
    College provides

programs that transfer to other two-year schools
and to baccalaureate programs at four-year

  • Comprehensive support services that assist

    and employment goals
  • Technical programs which meet the economic
development needs of business and industry
  • A community education program, which
incorporates the principles of service and
    continuing education for area citizens.
  • The Colleges provision of these programs and
services is supported by an open-admissions
policy which provides access to students from
    diverse racial, religious, economic, educational,
and cultural backgrounds. Within this open
environment, the College proposes to offer
educational opportunities that will improve the

expected to attend regularly and punctually all
classes in which they are enrolled. Faculty
members shall develop and implement their own
absence policies. The determination of what
constitutes excessive absences rest with the
instructor, but must not be less than the college
minimum of 10 of the total class meetings.

17
Online Course
  • Thinking about taking an online class?
  • Read this before you register for the class.
  • Online does not mean checking in whenever you
feel like it! Students participating in
electronic learning courses have greater freedom
of scheduling, but electronic courses require
    more self-discipline than traditional on-campus
classes. Electronic courses require much more
time than on-campus courses and are generally
harder than traditional classes. You can expect
to spend anywhere from 10-15 hours per week per
online course. Also, many of the traditional
courses taught at South Louisiana Community
College (SLCC) are enhanced by the wide
    utilization of computer and Blackboard
    Technologies.
  • Online Courses
  • Students taking online courses will be utilizing
    SLCC's Blackboard E-Learning Platform.
Instructors delivering courses via the Internet
will provide their students with an online
orientation or a face-to-face orientation session
on SLCC's Campus on how to use the Blackboard
    Platform. Also, the Information Technology
    Department will offer Blackboard orientation
sessions. Students need to be self-motivated with
good study and time management skills they need
to be computer literate, be goal oriented,
capable of learning on their own through reading,
research, and assignments, be able to save and
manage files on their computer, know how to send
and open e-mail attachments, check e-mail, access
the Internet, and participate in their online
course at least 3-5 times per week. Some courses
require access to certain software programming.
  • First-Time Online Students
  • All first-time online students are REQUIRED to
attend one of the "General Blackboard Orientation
Sessions", as well as the MANDATORY face-to-face
orientation sessions. The dates will be
    announced.
  • If you are interested in Online courses, register
as soon as possible. Online courses have a
    maximum enrollment of 20 students.

18
Student Schedule Changes
  • The college designates a period (drop/add) during
which a student may make schedule changes.
Specific dates and procedures are listed in the
    current schedule of classes.
  • Students are responsible for officially dropping
courses it is not the responsibility of
instructors to drop students for non attendance.
  • Drop/Add
  • During this period, students may drop/add classes
    only within the first
  • 4 days of a Spring or Fall Semester and the
first 2 days of a summer semester.
  • NOTE Dropping a course after the drop/add
period will not reduce the students financial
obligation to the college and may affect
    eligibility for continued financial aid.
  • Dropping with a grade of W or Resignation
  • As of the 5th day of a Fall/Spring Semester and
the 3rd day of a summer semester, a student may
continue to drop one or more classes or drop all
classes (resignation) and will receive a grade of
a W. Students must initiate the process by
meeting with their advisor and submitting the
appropriate form to the Registrars office in
accordance with dates printed in the schedule of
classes. See last day to drop with a grade of
    W.
  • Students who stop attending courses without
    officially dropping/resigning may receive failing
    grades in those courses.

  • WHAT IS FERPA (Family Educational Rights
    Privacy Act)?
  • The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of
1974, as amended (also sometimes referred to as
the Buckley Amendment), is a federal law
regarding the privacy of student records and the
obligations of the institution, primarily in the
areas of release of the records and the access
provided to these records. Any educational
institution that receives funds under any program
administered by the U.S. Secretary of Education
is bound by FERPA requirements. Institutions that

in a subject area, scores and grades on papers,
exams, etc. are all examples of personally
identifiable information that make up part of the
    student's education record.
  • This information is protected under FERPA and
parents may not have access unless the student
    has provided written authorization that
specifically identifies what information may be
    released to the parent(s).
  • Access to student records
  • At the postsecondary level, parents have no
inherent rights to access or inspect their son or
    daughter's education records.
  • This right is limited solely to the student.
  • At SLCC, records may be released to parents only
if they have been given a written release by the
