Stanhope does not seem to deserve the respect
Osborne gives him
Agree
Disagree
Stanhope is a very heavy drinker and is almost
always drunk and is therefore unable to lead
effectively Hardy How is the dear young boy?
Drinking like a fish as
usual? Hes going through the same situations as
everyone else, yet they dont rely on drinking
their problems away. Stanhope decides to censor
Raleigh's private letters, despite him being an
officer and without his knowing Stanhope I
censor his letters Stanhope doesnt seem to
treat anyone else without respect, so why does he
deserve respect? (Referring to the pepper)
Stanhope (to Mason) Then I advise you never to
leave it to anyone else again unless you want
to rejoin your platoon out there. He treats
Raleigh with unnecessary disrespect. Raleigh
Hullo Stanhope! Stanhope (in a low voice) how
did - you get here? Stanhope . . . (he turns to
Raleigh for the first time) Trotter goes on duty
directly hes had supper. You better go on with
him to learn Hes lying, bending the truth to
his girlfriend. Stanhope She thinks Im a
wonderful chap commanding a company. She
doesnt know that if I went up those steps into
the front line without being doped with whisky
Id go mad with fright. He loses his temper
very quickly. Stanhope God, you little
swine! He threatens to shoot Hibbert for him
asking to leave. Stanhope If you went, Id
have you shot for deserting. Stanhope could
have sent other officers instead, but he chose to
send Raleigh and Osborne. Colonel Well who else
is there? I could send an officer from another
company. Stanhope (quickly) Oh Lord, no, well
do it.
Stanhope only drinks before going out to fight,
to calm him down and prepare himself for the
terrors that the war beholds Hes commanded
this company for a long time through all
sorts of rotten times its a big strain on a
man. Hes a very dedicated lieutenant. Guiding
them through thick and thin. Stanhope Ive had
my share of luck more than my share. Theres
not a man left who was here when I
came. Osborne Hes been out here a long time.
It it tells on a man rather badly. Raleighs
a new officer and cant be trusted. Stanhope has
to make sure that he doesnt give away any
classified information about their war plans.
Stanhope You know hell write and tell her I
reek of whisky all day. He wants to protect
Raleighs sister from the truth, because we wants
to keep the relationship they had before the war.
Osborne Shes an awfully nice looking
girl Stanhope has to make sure that everybody
knows that he is in charge, and so he can keep
everyone in order. He was only horrible to
Raleigh because he was in shock at him turning up
at his regiment it was a reminder of his past
which he didnt want. Stanhope My officers
work together Ill have no damn prigs. He
calms down Hibbert when he becomes hysterical and
persuades him not to leave and to actually go up
the front line. He comforts him when he
cries. Stanhope Stay here, old chap and see
it through He gets everything organised for the
big attack, e.g. sorting out the wire around the
trench, organising runners and even during the
attack he is still sending up reports to Trotter,
even though he is preoccupied. Stanhope The
officers are coming up in a minute. Theyll stand
by with their platoons. I must stay here a while
in case of messages. I shall come up directly
things begin to happen.
