Pakistan merged all its constituents to form West
Pakistan in 1955 Provinces and the princely
states lost their status One-unit was abolished
in 1969 Provinces were restored but not the
princely states Malakand Division that includes
Swat, Dir, Chitral was formed as Provincially
Administered Tribal Area (PATA) Selective
application of laws chaos and confusion in
administration of justice. Regular system of
justice extended in 1990

4First Malakand uprising in 1994, paralyzed the
government. It agreed to enact special Islamic
laws and courts for the area Mullahs remained
unsatisfied. Militancy grew and was influenced by
the events in Afghanistan following 9/11 Heavy
arms and FM radios virtually ended the
governments writ in the area two years ago

elements and institutions that espouse the cause
of Taliban The government finally put its foot
down in late April 2009. The Prime Minister
announced the Operation against the militants on
7th May and the exodus started

blatantly exploited by the timber mafia One of
the favorite tourists spots. Honeymooners
paradise. Attracts a lot of foreign tourists as
well. Small industries like silk and other local
crafts
