Mosquito Bite
  • ByKrista ODaniel Glenda Raven

2
For the Teacher
  • A journey into the human senses
  • vs. the mosquito senses and their
  • life cycles.

3
Lesson Overview
  • Students will learn how to compare the mosquitos
senses and life cycle to the human beings senses
    and life cycle.
  • In this lesson, students will explore the
mosquito and human beings senses as well as
compare the life cycle of each, by completing a
Venn diagram and doing various hands-on
activities that will allow them to gain more
    experience on insects.

4
Instructional Goals
  • TLW be able to describe the senses of mosquitoes
and humans and their life cycles.
  • TLW be able to illustrate the life cycles of a
    mosquito versus a human.
  • TLW be able to create their own mosquito and
write a story about the mosquito.

5
Formative Assessment
  • In small groups, label the body parts of the
mosquito compared to the human body.
  • Draw a Venn diagram of the mosquito senses
compared to that of human being senses.
  • Create a mosquito illustration on paper or build
a mosquito and write a story that talks about the
    mosquito.

6
Opening The Lesson
  • The teacher and students will brainstorm what
    they know about mosquitoes.
  • TLW will discuss what they already know about
    mosquitoes with a partner.
  • TLW do a K-W-L chart in order to list what they
    know.
  • After discussing as a class what they already
know about mosquitoes, they will think about what
    they want to learn.
  • TLW then discuss what they want to learn with a
    partner.
  • TLW write on their K-W-L chart what they want to
    learn.

7
Developing The Lesson
  • TLW take picture walk of story.
  • TLW make predictions and record them in
    Scientists journal.
  • The teacher will read the story with the
    students.
  • The teacher will demonstrate a Venn diagram of
the body of a cat compared to the body of a dog
as an example to the students.
  • TLW get with a partner and do an example Venn
    diagram comparing home to school.
  • TLW get with partners and go to centers.

8
Closing The Lesson
  • TLW will create their own mosquitoes by
illustration or building one and write a story
about their mosquito from the mosquitos point of
    view.
  • TLW share their story with one other student.

9
Teacher Resources
  • The supplies needed for this lesson will be
construction paper, markers or crayons, scissors,
glue, pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks, sequins.
  • Be careful with scissors!

10
Enrichment Activities
  • Students can play Guess What with a partner.
TLW describe a certain body part or sense that a
mosquito has and allow their partners to guess.
  • Students can play a true/false game about facts
    from the story.
  • Students can create a song that will help them
remember the parts of a mosquito.

11
Accommodations For Special Learners
  • Some students may need to work in a small group
    with the teacher.
  • Some students may need more of a challenge, so
they can create a song that will help them
    remember facts about the mosquito.
  • If there is a student who needs to be paired with
another student, it will be available.

12
Standardized Test Item
  • All living and nonliving things that surround an
    animal are part of its
  • a. Food chain
  • b. Life cycle
  • c. Environment
  • d. Atmosphere

13
Its a Bugs Life
14
Learning Goals
  • You will need to identify the part that belongs
to a mosquito (handout will be provided for you).
  • You will need to be able to identify the sense
that the mosquito uses to collect specific
    information
  • You will be able to compare among the stages in
the life cycle of a butterfly, a frog, and plants.

15
Assessment
  • You will be monitored by your behavior within
your group as well as your participation.
  • Also, all of your information and drawings that
you create should be listed in your Scientists
    Journal.
  • A rubric will be provided in order to show you
    how you will be graded.

16
Learning Activity
  • The teacher will review the instructions for each
center with you and describe how you are to
interact with each other in the center.
  • There will be a list of instructions located in a
folder at every center you go to.
  • You will record your information in your
    scientists journals.
  • After you complete the activity at that center,
make sure all materials are placed back in the
folder and center should be in neat condition.

17
Enrichment Activities
  • If you happen to finish early, please DO NOT
begin talking and playing with other people
    outside of your group.
  • If you finish, you and your partner may play
Guess what. The object of the game is to have
one person describe a certain body part or sense
that a mosquito has, and allow their partners to
    guess.
  • Also, you can play a true/false game about
    facts from the story.
  • Another option that you have is to create a song
that will help you remember the parts of a
    mosquito.
