• Spreading worldwide
• May cause more illness and more severe illness
  than usual flu

• Contagious illness

• Through being near someone with virus who coughed
  or sneezed
• Touching something with respiratory droplets from
  an infected person

Signs and Symptoms

• Must Have
• Fever (101.1 or higher)
• Cough or Sore throat
• and one more symptom
• Headache
• Extreme tiredness
• Runny or stuffy nose
• Muscle aches
• Chills
• Vomiting (with young children)
• Sometimes diarrhea (with young children)

Prevention

• Cover nose mouth
• Wash hands
• Avoid touching eyes, nose mouth
• Avoid close contact with sick residents

Prevention

• Novel H1N1 Vaccine
• Still being tested
• Available in fall
• Can receive both seasonal flu vaccine and H1N1
  vaccine on same day
• Seasonal flu vaccine will not protect against
  H1N1

PreventionHand Washing

• Wet hands with warm water then apply soap
• Rub soapy hands together for 20 -30 seconds
• Use fingernails of one hand to clean nails of
  other
• Rinse hands thoroughly to remove all soap
• Turn off water with paper towel
• Dry hands with air dryer or another paper towel
• Toss the paper towel once you are done

• If soap and water are not available
• Use alcohol based disposable wipes or gel
  sanitizers

• GEL
• Place a quarter sized of gel in palm
• Rub hands together covering with gel
• Continue to rub until dry

• Disposable Wipes
• Wet hands wrists thoroughly with wipes
• Allow to air dry
• Dispose of wipe in trash

• No leaving area except for medical treatment
• Resident must wear surgical mask
• Remind sick resident Staff

• Exhibiting symptoms of the flu
• Staff will be provided
• respirators, gowns shoe coverings
• Will be fitted for and instructed on N95
  respirators
• To be used when in close contact with ill
  resident
• To be disposed of after use in the regular trash

• Throw away disposable items used by sick resident
  
• Keep surfaces clean by wiping down with
  disinfectant
• Linens should be washed in hot water
