Title: SEPERATING SOLUTE AND SOLVENT

1
SEPERATING SOLUTE AND SOLVENT
2
Solute and solvent maintain their properties and
can be separated from the solution
  • Simple methods
  • Evaporation process where liquid changes into
    gas.
  • If the solution is a liquid solid solution then
the liquid turns to gas and leaves the solid
    behind.
  • Example hard water drying and leaving the
minerals (solutes) behind as white spots.
  • Boiling process where liquid changes rapidly
    into gas.
  • Each liquid has its own boiling point
  • If the solution is liquid-solid the solid is
    left behind
  • If the solution is liquid liquid they can be
    separated by boiling points.

3
Distillation
  • Combines boiling with condensation to separate
    solute and solvent.
  • Allows to collect both substances
  • Works for liquid-solid solutions
  • Works for liquid liquid solutions using different
    boiling points.

4
Distillation Process
  • Solution is placed in a closed flask with a tube
connected to the cork. (this way the vapor can
only go out through the tube.
  • Solution is heated.
  • Liquid turns to gas and gas out into the tube.
  • Gas cools and condenses turning into liquid
    again in the tube.
  • Liquid falls into a second flask.
  • One part of the solution was left behind in the
first flask and the other is collected in the
    second.

5
In your binder
  • Make and label a diagram to show the
    distillation process.
  • Make a diagram showing the water cycle. Label it
and explain why it is considered a distillery.
  • Draw several ways of desalination (Separating
salt from salt water or ocean)
  • Homework Read pages 152- 160 and define bold
    words.
