5Active Listening Note Taking
- Back to todays episode . . .
- taking in and recording information
6Major Concepts
- Stages of Listening
- Develop a Learning Attitude
- Learning takes place before, during and after
class - Listen actively maintain your attention
- Strategies for attention note taking
- Three major note taking systems
- Three alternate/supportive strategies
- Note taking symbols abbreviations
7If we were supposed to talk more than we listen,
we would have two mouths and one ear.
8A Bit about Listening
- A process that involves sensing, interpreting,
evaluating and reacting to spoken messages. (p.
164) - Key Points from our Text
9The Stages of Listening(Communication Cycle)
- Sensation
- hear the message with ears
- Interpretation
- attach meaning to the message
- Evaluation
- judge message against personal values
- Reaction
- provide feedback through questions and comments
10Become an Active Listener
- Set a purpose for learning
- know what and why you want to learn (care)
- Pay attention to verbal signposts
- transition words phrases
- Ask questions
- More information or clarification
- patiently!
- of the professor (if possible)
- in the tutorial
- of your textbook, of yourself
11Develop a learning attitude -- be prepared to
learn . . .
- Before Class
- During Class
- After Class
12The responsibility for learning is yours, not

13Before class
- Prepare your mind
- read all the assigned material
- review lecture notes from previous classes
- anticipate what is coming in class

- relax and focus
- prepare your body
- rested and fed
- exercised and oxygenated
- Prepare your learning materials
14What not to do before class
- eat a heavy meal
- drink alcohol
- drink a strong diuretic (coffee, tea, cola)
- waste time before class
- expect to be taught (learning is not something
that is done to you) - expect to avoid required reading
15During class
- attend -- 85 of success in life is just showing
up (80 - Woody Allen) - sit in the front two or three rows
- easier to hear
- easier to see
- easier to concentrate
- easier feel part of class
- easier to ask questions
- more difficult to leave early
- more difficult to skip
16During class (from our text)
- Manage Listening Challenges (barriers)
- Divided Attention and Distractions
- Internal External
- Shutting Out the Message
- Attitude difficult or uninteresting
- The Rush to Judgment
- Shut down if you dont like the message
- Hearing Loss Learning Disabilities
17Auditory LD (CAPD)
18During class
- listen actively
- pay attention to structure
- tie what you hear to what you already know
- silently question and attempt conclusions
- keep an open mind
- question -- patiently and thoughtfully
- watch for body language
- listen to your instructors voice
- learn to be an active information filter
19During class
- make notes
- do you want to use a system?
- dont attempt verbatim records
- use keywords/reduce
- use shorthand or symbols
- try to find a pattern
- make your notes in your own words
- copy all diagrams and graphs
- dont be afraid to be nonlinear
- neatness doesnt count, but clarity does!
- leave a lot of blank space
20During class
- should I tape record lectures?
- dont be lazy!
- do I have the time?
- ask permission!
- use your tape recorder strategically!
- try not to re-listen to whole lecture
- use the counter or cue feature
21After class
- immediately after class
- review your notes -- beat the forgetting curve
- take 10 to 20 minutes to
- fill in the blanks
- squeeze out the detail
- finish the sentences
- complete the diagrams
- write down your impressions
- put it in your own words!
22After class
- review -- keep beating that curve!
- within 24 hours
- within one week or before next class
- within one month

- LOOK - Instructors are generally consistent in
their order of presentation as well as in what
they present. - IDENTIFY - Identify why what the instructor is
saying is important to you. - SET UP - Set up your situation to maximize the
possibility of hearing and staying in touch with
the lecture. - TUNE IN - Learn to increase your attention span
by timing just how long you can last before you
think of something else. - EXAMINE - Examine the context to determine the
main points. - NOTES - Taking notes while you listen will
improve your concentration.
