with very good reasons prolongation possible,
final decision by studies director the
assumption is that you work full time (min 40
hours per week) on your MA thesis.

3
Rules / Guidelines
  • Main advisor and student jointly define thesis
topic (question, title, methodology, etc.) of MA
    thesis.
  • Main advisor, in consultation with the student,
determines formal start date and end date of MA
thesis as well as the evaluation criteria she/he
informs Claudia Jenny and the student in writing
(students remind your main advisor if she/he
forgets). This notification kicks off the six
    months time-frame.
  • The MA thesis colloquium (takes place each autumn
semester) is mandatory. It usually includes two
    student presentations research idea research
    design.
  • Students present their next to final results in
an additional workshop in late February/early
March. This workshop is also mandatory.

Rules / Guidelines
  • Grading 1...6 grade 4.0 required for passing
  • Revision and resubmission possible
  • If the MA thesis is not accepted (after RR)
second chance with new topic (mandatory) and the
possibility of a new main advisor (optional) no
third chance no possibility to repeat the MA
thesis or to carry out a RR if grade 4.0
  • Successful completion of MA thesis is required
    for obtaining MA degree
  • Choose your second advisor (co-referee) within
the first month of the formal start. Inform
Claudia Jenny who your main and second advisor
are, send copy of this information to your main
    and second advisor.
  • Deadlines You must submit your MA thesis on time
in hard-copy form (properly bound). One copy must
be deposited with Claudia Jenny, and one copy
each must be deposited with your main and second
advisor. If you deposit your thesis after the
formal deadline, it will automatically be
    rejected.

5
Informal Advice
  • Feel free to chose your topic and main advisor,
irrespective of whether you have a research
assistant employment with a particular professor
  • Prospective PhD students at CIS now involved in
MA thesis work do not enjoy an advantage over
those who are planning to seek employment
    elsewhere.
  • If you plan to do a PhD afterwards, you can use
the MA thesis as a first step and move on with
the same topic from the MA to the PhD.
  • Dont artificially delay the formal starting
date formal deadlines usually act as a strong
    motivator
  • If you have a 20 RA position, take no more than
one elective course, so that you can invest at
least 40-50 working hours (in good physical
condition) per week in your MA thesis.

6
Informal Advice
  • Choose your second advisor (co-referee) soon and
    keep her/him up to date.
  • Ask your main advisor to appoint an advanced PhD
student or postdoc as your coach and meet with
    this person once a week.
  • Dont gamble with deadlines. They are strict. If
you deposit your thesis after the deadline, it
will be rejected. If you anticipate problems with
the deadline contact Claudia Jenny, your main
advisor, or Thomas Bernauer as early as possible
and dont wait until the sh... hits the fan.
  • The last two months of the MA thesis work are
usually very stressful, particularly for those of
you who are looking for a job. Once in a while, I
hear the phrase Im done with my research, I
just need to write it up. If you are in such a
position two months before the deadline,
something must have gone terribly wrong!
