Building A Career Plan
Your Career Plan is a list of actions you will
take to reach your career goals. It should
include
  • Competencies you will acquire
  • Leadership skills you will master
  • Education and training you will experience
  • Steps you will take in your current role to
demonstrate the skills and qualities required for
    the next desired role
  • Factors you will avoid because they will not
    support your goals

Two is one and one is none
10
Are You Ready For A New Role?
You should remain in your current role as long as
it takes to get the maximum benefit and make the
maximum contribution.
  • Have you learned all there is to learn in your
    current role?
  • Have you contributed as much as possible to your
    current role?
  • Did you make a difference in your current role?
  • Have you left a significant legacy in your
    current role?

Know your job and take care of your people
11
Evaluate and Improve
The workplace is an ever changing environment
that fluctuates in response to economic,
political and social changes.
  • Take stock of your skills and the requirements of
your career on a regular basis
  • Seek out constructive feedback and dont be
    defensive when you get it
  • Review your development plan and career plan
regularly and talk about them with your manager
  • Take something away from every experience,
    especially the bad ones

If at first you don't succeed, then bomb disposal
probably isn't for you
12

What relationships and networks will help you
reach your goals?
14
Start with Your Manager
Build a positive working relationship with your
manager
  • Develop a reputation as a problem solver. When
    presenting issues also present potential
    solutions
  • Bring potential problems up for discussion before
they become emergencies . . . no surprises
  • Keep your manager informed of all issues that
    impact performance
  • Begin every proposal with an analysis of how it
will help support the business needs
  • Be honest in all of your assessments. Remember
you are both working for the advancement of the
    business

If you have a personality conflict with your
superior  he has the personality, you have the
conflict
15
Networking
Networking is a systematic approach to gathering
information, establishing long-term contacts,
sharpening career objectives and gaining
professional exposure.
  • Use those you know to introduce you to others -
    expand your network
  • Prepare and use an elevator speech that describes
    you
  • Be ready - Networking opportunities can occur
    anywhere, anytime.

Imagine a chance meeting with your managers
leader in an empty elevator with 90 seconds to
ride. Introduce yourself, describe your brand
and your contribution to the business.
Its not what you know but who knows you

You cannot predict the future, so dont waste
any time worrying about it. The challenge you
must accept, right now, is to make yourself
better everyday. First, commit to learn everyday.
You have to have an incredible thirst for
knowledge. Learn from the work you do, from the
people you admire. Learn by hurting and failing
and dont take things at face value. Dig deep to
discover the truth for yourself. Your curiosity
and desire to learn things on your own terms is
really a key to success. -- Jeff Immelt
