The Manhattan Project

• Goal of Manhattan Project was to create atomic
  bomb.
• USA began project when they heard Germany was
  attempting to create nuclear weapons.
• Project involved USA, Canada, and UK.

Trumans Decision to Drop the Bomb

• Harry Truman made the decision to drop the atomic
  bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki for several
  reasons
• 1. Wanted to save as many US lives as
  possible.
• 2. Wanted to find a way to make Japan surrender
  as quickly as possible.
• 3. Wanted to end WWI.

Little Boy

• Little Boy was the first atomic bomb dropped on
  Hiroshima (August 6, 1945).
• Dropped by the B-29 bomber, Enola Gay
• Bomb killed approximately
• 140,000 people.
• 9.84 feet long,
• 28 inches in diameter,
• and 8,900 pounds.

Fat Man

• Fat Man was the second atomic bomb dropped just
  three days later on Nagasaki (August 9, 1945).
• Dropped by a B-29 bomber, Bockscar
• killed estimated 39,000 with
• another 25,000 wounded.
• 10.6 feet long, had a
• diameter of 5 feet, and
• weighed 10,200 pounds.
