An Equipping Pastor should be familiar with the
entire process a layperson must follow to become
a Certified Lay Minister. Refer to Steps
document

An Equipping Pastor is assigned to work with a
CLM by the DS in consultation with DCOM

Ideally you will build a friendship and close
working relationship with the CLM, yet still be
able to operate in a supervisory role.

A CLM may be serving some or most pastoral
functions in a local church, but they are not
clergy, nor do they have the depth of training in
leadership skills, Bible study / theology that
you do.

the congregation they work with on how to keep
the connection with other United Methodists,
other UMCs, the District and Annual Conference

the Psych assessment process as it is coordinated

A Trainer designated by the DCOM is responsible
for the CLM training process. Your role as
Supervising Clergy is to walk alongside the CLM
and offer guidance as needed in both their
training and as they fill their role in the
church congregation they are ultimately assigned
to serve.

Practical guidance, suggestion of resources for
study, preaching and other leadership skills will
be crucial parts of your coaching role with the
CLM.

Schedule regular meetings with the CLM to
facilitate the sharing of your experience and
insights and monitor their work and educational
progress.Suggested Weekly at onset, monthly
after they start getting comfortable phone or
e-mail in between

Perhaps one of the most important roles will be
in assisting and guiding the CLM and Mutual
Ministry team in the formation of their covenant
agreement, or in the annual review and refining
of their agreement.

Another crucial piece for you to discuss will be
the selection of a required annual Continuing
Education option to help the CLM gain training
in areas of perceived weakness or potential.

Annually, with the Local Hire CLM (bi-annually
for the CLM with other staff assignment) as they
prepare to appear before DCOM for
recertification, the Supervising Clergy person
should meet with the CLM and prepare a written
report of their relationship over the previous
year for the DCOM and DS to consider as a part of
the CLM accountability process.
