Step 1 Develop a Plan

• Site visit with a Forester DNR or Private
• Define objectives for the planting

• Species based on site
• Upland (dry) - Oaks/Walnut/Cherry/Conifers
• Bottomland (wet) - Silver Maple/SWO
• Spacing (machine) based on maintenance and cost
• Trees (7X10) 622 per acre
• Shrubs (5X8) 1089 per acre
• Hand planting fewer, larger trees

• Cropped - mow stalks
• Pasture/Grasses mow late August and spray
  Roundup after 6 inches of regrowth
• Roundup strips 3 to 4 feet wide
• Broadcast application requires reseeding

• Plant as soon as seedlings arrive (April/May)
• Plant straight and at same depth as at nursery
  (root collar)
