We want to upgrade our knowledge base
5How is the best way to accomplish this goal?
NO
Pay to bring the physicians to attend meetings
in the countries with great resources
6How is the best way to accomplish this goal?
NO
Pay to bring noted speakers with special
expertise from the countries with lots of
resources
7Many time, these alternatives are too expensive
for physicians from countries with limited
resources
8 The
is trying to address this challenge
9A tri-lingual course
It started in 1998
The simultaneous translation was provided by the
participating faculty
Haitians
Dominicans
10There was a lot interactivity with the
participants
France
11Puerto Rico
12It was so well received that it was repeated 18
months later
This time there were some improvements
A larger faculty
13Speak slowly and clearly !!
This time there were professional interpreters
14The faculty included world renowned speakers
David Green noted hand surgeon and textbook
author
15Interactive sessions still a major part of the
course
16Yo pienso es mejor a operar
Je pense non!!!
There was a lot of exchange of ideas with the
faculty
17Yo no Hablo Creole
Aurelio Martinez from Monterrey, Mexico
Truly an international faculty
18This experience in Haiti demonstrated that
effective Outreach Continuing Education Courses
can be conducted in countries with limited
educational resources
19Since 2000, The POSNA Committee on
Orthopedics in Underdeveloped Regions (COUR)
Has expanded this program by conducting
25 Outreach Continuing Education Courses in 17
countries
20The protocol
- After a pediatric orthopedic organization
- agrees to host a POSNA
- Outreach Continuing Education Course
- in their area, the COUR committee
- recruits volunteer faculty to participate
- in the course or courses.
One of the POSNA volunteers is selected to serve
as the coordinator to work with local country
host
21The POSNA faculty members pay their travel
expenses to and from the host country
The organization in the host country is then
responsible for providing local travel, food,
housing and the local venue for the course.
All of the expenses and income derived from the
course are the property of the host individuals
or organizations.
22With one exception, Outreach Continuing
Education Courses have been conducted in the
major continents
23In 2007 POSNA established a cooperative
program to jointly organize these Outreach
Continuing Education Courses
With the European Pediatric Orthopedic
Society (EPOS)

29Is this more than Pediatric Orthopedic Tourism??
What are the benefits?
What are the downsides of this project ?
30Both groups of individuals benefit
For example the POSNA Faculty members
31See severe neglected deformities not seen in
North America
32Chronic Osteomyelitis
33They have the opportunity to meet orthopedists
from many other countries
France
Equador
Peru
El Salvador
34In addition to becoming more acquainted with the
local culture,
There are many other positive aspects for the
POSNA faculty
35- Develop long term relationships
- India, Vietnam, South America, Iraq
- Learn how to treat complex problems with limited
resources - Be away from their practice for just a week
- Return to spread the word among other POSNA
members the joys of participating in outreach
activities
36The benefits to the participants go beyond just
the knowledge gained from the courses
Upon arrival to the hospital, we immediately went
to work seeing patients
37Some of the young orthopedists
38have been identified to participate in
1. POSNA Scholarship programs
2. Short-term obseverships
3. Formal Fellowships
39The faculty members need to be preparedfor the
unexpected events beyond their control
- Obtaining visas
- Exposure to unusual diseases
- Language differences

have left four people dead, including two
peacekeepers.
42Important things we have learned
- 1. Ask the host individuals what subjects they
want covered. - Do not tell them what they need.
- 2. Try to find POSNA faculty to meet the needs of
the subjects to be presented. - Try not to comprise the faculty totally based
upon ones friends. - 3. Always include local individuals as faculty.
- Everybody has something to contribute
- 4. Build inter-action with the audience into the
program - This will assure that your audience is awake.
- Dont Simplify the lectures.
- Most want to learn about the state of the art
treatment.
43In conclusion. POSNA has demonstrated that
Continuing Education can be provided cheaply and
easily to Countries with limited resources
44Future plans
- If there is a need, we would like to
- expand into Africa and our programs
- in the Middle East
2. Encourage other organization to develop
similar programs
American Society of the Hand
Shanghai Childrens Hospital
45Thank you for your attention.
