- Respectively, age-adjusted death rates for blacks
were 1.4 (all causes), 1.2 (coronary disease),
1.4 (cancer), and 3 (infant mortality) times
higher than that of whites. The infant mortality
rate was equal to the number of deaths per 1,000
live births. - The age-adjusted death rate for uninsured persons
(total 33,325) was 13.1. The rate for the
27,406 uninsured adults was 14.1, and 9 for the
5,490 uninsured children.

- In 1997, the total number of deaths resulting
from heart disease was 383, compared to 388 in
1998. Malignant neoplasm resulted in 282 deaths
in 1997 and 1998. Cerebrovascular disease
resulted in 73 deaths in 1997 and 92 deaths in
1998. In both 1997 and 1998, 58 persons passed
away due to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary
disease. Diabetes resulted in 49 deaths in 1997,
and Pneumonia Influenza resulted in 41 deaths in
1998.

4The distribution of lead poisoned children in
2002 was distributed fairly evenly across the
city, with the notable exception being the fourth
ward in the west side. Children residing in
homes constructed before 1978 are at the highest
risk of lead poisoning.
