What is dual language?

What are the benefits of being bilingual?

What does the research say about dual language?
  • Native English speakers students in immersion
    programs acquire the same proficiency in English
    and achieve the same levels of competence in
    their academic subjects as students in
    all-English programs. They also acquire
    functional proficiency in a second language.
  • Native speakers of the target language make
    better progress in acquiring English and in
    academic development if they receive some
    schooling in their primary language at the same
    time as they are learning English
  • All students bilingual students perform better
    than monolingual students on tasks that call for
    divergent thinking, pattern recognition, problem
    solving and metalinguistic awareness

What about homework?
  • The younger children have very limited homework.
    Parents can focus on native language literacy at
    home.
  • In the upper grades, project based homework will
    be completed in the familys native language or
    English.
  • Other homework in the upper grades (math,
    spelling) may be in Spanish or English.
