LAND FOR NADAWA
The Village of Nadawa is about 20kms out of Suva
on the island of Viti Levu. 12 households
ofMelanesians live on this land which was
reclaimed from a mangrove swamp. In 2003 the
Anglican Church of Polynesia worked with
support from New Zealand to bring water pipes
into the village. However, land tenure has been
an issue since the people moved to the area.

However, land tenure has been an issue since the
people moved to the area. The Anglicare arm of
the Anglican Church is now negotiating with the
land owners to buy the land outright. The total
cost of this is F80,000 and Anglicare is seeking
our support of NZ10,000 each year over the next
three years towards this total. They are also
seeking some ofthe required funds from the
Fijian Government. This will give the villagers
right of tenurefor life as tenants of the Church.

5On 3 sides of the village are Mangrove Swamps. At
high tide the village men take these boats out
and catch fish, returning on the next high
tide. The fish are then carried to the main road,
40 minutes walk away, to be sold in a roadside
stall.

6The village has no electricity or running water,
and communal pit toilets are used. All cooking is
carried out in cook houses such as this one.

7This well is the only water supply for the whole
village. Water from here is used for cooking,
laundry, washing and drinking.

8Although the people are happy, the church aims to
improve their standard of living by giving them a
consistent, clean water supply.

9These are water pipes to the village next door to
Nadawa. The piping system is to be extended to
put taps at strategic places throughout the
village of Nadawa.
