3Properties
Magnesium is the eighth most abundant
element in the earth's crust although not found
in it's elemental form. It is a Group 2 element
(Group IIA in older labelling schemes). Group 2
elements are called alkaline earth metals.
Magnesium tarnishes slightly in air, and
finely divided magnesium readily ignites upon
heating in air and burns with a dazzling white
flame. Normally magnesium is coated with a layer
of oxide, MgO, that protects magnesium from air
and water.
4Compounds Organic magnesium is important in both
plant and animal life. Chlorophylls are

magnesium-centered perphyrins. The adult daily
nutritional requirement, which is affected by
various factors include weight and size, is about
300 mg/day.
5History
Discovered Recognised as an
element by Joseph Black of Edinburgh, UK in
1755 Isolated by Sir Humphry Davy in 1808 at
England.
Origin The element is named after
Magnesia, a district of Thessaly in Greece,
where it was first found.

Comments Magnesite crystal
group. The crystals have rhombic habit. The
largest on this specimen is 3.7 cm across.
7USAGE
It is now used in alloys to provide lightweight
frames for bicycles, car seats and luggage.
