CIS Mission Statement Communities In Schools
helps young people stay in school, successfully
learn, and prepare for life by connecting needed
community resources with schools.

  • Largest and most effective DROPOUT PREVENTION
    organization in the country. Provide services and
    connect resources to at-risk youth in public
    schools.
  • CIS-National
  • 199 CIS affiliates in 27 states
  • 1.2 million youth served directly by CIS each
    year
  • CIS of Charlotte-Mecklenburg
  • Initiated 1985 - with 1 CMS school and 80
    students. Today CIS serves 4,500 students
    annually in 37 schools.

  • Charlotte 2,512 students dropped out last year
  • North Carolina over 23,500 dropouts
  • U.S. Average graduation rate is 73
  • In N.C. - 69 graduation rate
  • For every 100 9th graders, only 69 will graduate
    4 years later.
  • Every 9 seconds in America a student drops out.

  • Dropouts are twice as likely to be unemployed
    than college graduates.

    costs 25K per year

    209,000 (Decreased tax revenue, welfare, public

  • 99 of CIS students stayed in school
  • 88 promoted to the next grade
  • 90 of CIS seniors graduated
  • 150 CIS graduates currently enrolled in
    colleges/universities on scholarships with help
    of CIS. Majority are 1st generation college
    students.
