History of Steroids
  • Began in pre-WWII for experimental and
    therapeutic use.
  • After WWII it was used to regenerate muscle that
    was lost by concentration camp victims.
  • In 1950s it was used to effectively treat
    various forms of muscle diseases.
  • It is still used therapeutically in order to
    reduce muscle atrophy after surgery. By the
    1960s reports began to claim that athletes were
    using steroids in an attempt to improve
    performance.

Physiology of Steroids
  • Approximately 20 varieties of synthetic
    Testosterone

How do they Work??
  • The steroids act directly to promote DNA
    replication and protein synthesis.
  • It mimics testosterones configuration and is
    accepted into the cell where it can engage in the
    process of protein synthesis(the production of
    protein.
  • The effect on muscle is through the increase in
    muscle fibre size, not the number of fibres.
