History of Steroids

• Began in pre-WWII for experimental and
  therapeutic use.
• After WWII it was used to regenerate muscle that
  was lost by concentration camp victims.
• In 1950s it was used to effectively treat
  various forms of muscle diseases.
• It is still used therapeutically in order to
  reduce muscle atrophy after surgery. By the
  1960s reports began to claim that athletes were
  using steroids in an attempt to improve
  performance.

• Approximately 20 varieties of synthetic
  Testosterone

How do they Work??

• The steroids act directly to promote DNA
  replication and protein synthesis.
• It mimics testosterones configuration and is
  accepted into the cell where it can engage in the
  process of protein synthesis(the production of
  protein.
• The effect on muscle is through the increase in
  muscle fibre size, not the number of fibres.

• Most illegal steroids are purchased in gyms
• Physicians who supply steroids regularly monitor
  the patient.

• 75 of all track and field throwers.
• Over 75 of all Olympic Weight Lifters.
• 95 of Male Professional Bodybuilders.
• 20 of Female Professional Body Builders.
• Up to 15 of Canadian National Calibre Athletes.
• Up to 40 of all Professional Athletes.

What Can Go Wrong??

• Tumors
• Increased Risk of Heart Disease.
• Increased Risk of Cancer.
• Increased Risk of Injury to tendons, ligaments
  and bones.

  skin, acne, balding.
