Roofing Systems
  • To protect the roofing membrane from uplift
forces it needs to be fastened or ballasted.
Following roofing systems are worldwide used
  • Flat Roof (single ply)
  • mechanically attached
  • fully adhered
  • ballasted
  • Steep Roof (pitched roof)

10
Roofing Systems

11
Roofing Systems
Steep Roof (pitched roof)
12
Roofing Materials
  • PVC (Polyvinylchloride)
  • TPO (thermoplastic Polyolefin)
  • FPO (flexible Polyolefin)
  • EPDM (Ethylene-Propylene-Dien-Terpolymere)
  • Bitumen (asphalt modified with atactic
    polyolefin reinforced with a non-woven
    polyester mat)
  • ECB (Ethylene Copolymer Bitumen)
  • CSPE (Hypalon/chlorosulfonated polyethylene
    synthetic rubber )

13
Roofing Materials
Membrane Reinforcement
Roofing membranes with glass-fleece armouring
are used with loosely laid flat roofs which are
ballasted with gravel or plants.
14
Roofing Materials
Membrane Reinforcement
Roofing membranes with synthetic armouring
(polyester) are used for mechanically fixed flat
roofs. The material guarantees a high mechanical,
biaxial stability at the fastening screws.
15
Welding Procedure
16
Welding Procedure
  • Hot Air Welding

17
Welding Procedure
  • Following welding procedures are possible
  • extrusion welding
  • hot wedge welding (heating element)
  • hot air welding
  • All welding procedures require an accordance of
    the following parameters
  • temperature
  • pressure
  • speed
  • Joining areas must be dry and free of impurity.
For T-joints the front surface of the upper
    membrane must be held slanted.

18
Welding Procedure Under Construction Site
Conditions
  • Condition of Surface
  • solid underground with smooth surface without
    bumps (clean laying)
  • Building sites should be free of sharp items,
    roots and stones.
  • Environment Conditions / Weather Conditions /
    Rain
  • In case of rain it must not be welded without
    any special safety measures.
  • Air Temperature
  • Welding procedures have to be stopped at
temperatures under 5C in order to prevent high
thermal strains of the roofing membrane.

19
Welding Procedure Under Construction Site
Conditions
  • Air Humidity
  • High air humidity might cause perspiration water
on the welding surface which is unfavourable for
    the seam strength.
  • Wind
  • Due to strong wind the required welding
temperature might not be reached. To solve this
problem, the welding temperature has to be
increased up to 2030C. If the wind is too
strong, the welding area should be protected, or
the welding process has to be stopped.
  • Sunshine
  • Sunshine causes strong heating up, especially of
black roofing membranes. This causes an increased
thermal expansion of the membrane and results in
wrinkles. The welding process becomes more
difficult, and when cooling down abnormal strain
    in the seam area occurs.

Welding Machines
  • For welding of PVC, TPO, EPDM, CSPE, ECB roofing
    membranes
  • Overlap welding machine Varimat V 40mm,
    230V/4600W
  • Overlap welding machine Varimat V 40mm,
    400V/5700W
  • Speed 0.5 5 m/min
  • Pressure 190 N
  • Optional version with max. speed 12 m/min
    available
  • FEATURES
  • Easy welding even of homogenous and thin roofing
    membranes
  • Wrinkle-free welding up to 5m/min (optional 12
    m/min)

Welding Machines
VARIMAT V Special Accessories (Grip Nozzle)
Overlap welding nozzle Grip 40mm
(113.600) Overlap welding nozzle Grip 30mm
(113.995) Due to the rasps on the welding shoe
the surface of the material is roughened which
guarantees a better mixing of the thermoplastic
material.
Manufacturers of FPOA (flexible polyolefin alloy)
roofing membranes have first to clean the welding
seam area with special purifiers in order to
reach a perfect welding. By roughening the
roofing membrane the impurity and the oxide cover
can be scrapped off in order to get to the clean
surface. This allows to work without
purifiers. Not suitable for PVC!

BITUMAT Features
The easy to operate hot-air welding machine is
the perfect alternative to the hazard of propane
gas burners. The performance of the BITUMAT is a
constant, fast and perfect weld and is well
accepted with the insurance companies. Different
material manufacturer confirm, that the welding
performed with the BITUMAT, have up to 50 higher
peel resistance results compared to torch weld!!
