Title: Web and Education

1
IACT303 INTI 2005 World Wide Networking
  • Web and Education
  • University of Wollongong

2
Introduction
  • Access to learning
  • Distance education models
  • Types of Virtual Universities
  • Limitations and benefits
  • Where does S I M fit in this scheme?

3
What the web offers
  • Distributed multimedia hypertext system
  • Facilitating teaching and learning
  • Publish, retrieve, communicate
  • Different learning environment
  • New learning model
  • New instructional practices

4
Shared responsibility
  • Flexible and convenient learning opportunities
  • Intellectual communities are enhanced through
more interactive communication ie from books to
    email to live chat.
  • Students experience greater autonomy in learning

5
What is Online learning?
  • sub-set of flexible teaching and learning that
seeks to provide greater access to learning for
    all students.
  • An online learning environment provides for
different ways of learning and a potentially
    richer learning environment
  • Caters for different learning styles as well as
allowing for greater diversification in access to
    learning.

6
  • An online learning environment can include any or
all of a number of aspects ranging from
administration details relevant to the class to
    learning experiences mediated through interactive
multimedia to a total course delivered via the
    Internet.

7
Flexible teaching and learning
  • Flexible teaching seeks to provide educational
programs in ways that meet the changing needs of
    learners.
  • The learning opportunities of students are
optimised by the expert shaping of learning
environments within a particular course or
    program of study.

8
Flexible teaching and learning
  • Flexible teaching includes conventional teaching
practices and learning modes as well as
alternatives and options provided by various
media including, but not exclusive to, the recent
    developments in communications and information
    technology.

9
Flexible Access to learning
  • when they want - computer servers do not care
    when they are accessed
  • at their own pace adjusted for learning style,
    ability, available time etc.
  • wherever they want next door or across the
world from the server or university

10
Consumer quality of experience
  • student empowerment and responsibility the
student has the right to learn when they want
  • mass customisation allows the learning
offering to be tailored to individual student
    learning
  • styles, goals, abilities, hopefully leading to an
    improved outcome
  • enabling student access to vast quantities of
    information

11
Courses can be delivered over the Web
  • Internet based course delivery leads to price
competition between providers, a wider range of
choice, or greater flexibility in delivery
  • Education becomes a commodity

12
Models of Distance Education
Source Taylor (2003)
13
Emerging Organisational Models
  • Hanna (from the readings) discovers that the
distance education model is just one form of
change in educational delivery that has taken
    place.

14
Emerging Organisational Models
  • Hanna describes 7 models that challenge the
traditional model of residential, on campus
    higher education.
  • Corporate university
  • University/industry strategic alliance
  • Degree/certification competency-based university
  • Global multinational universities
  • Extended traditional university
  • For profit adult centred universities
  • Distance education/technology based university

15
Emerging Organisational Models
  • Each of the models are compared using the
    following criteria
  • Philosophy
  • Mission
  • Funding
  • Curricula
  • Instruction
  • Faculty
  • Library
  • Students
  • Learning Technology
  • Physical Facilities
  • Productivity Outcomes
  • Governance
  • Accreditation.

16
Emerging Organisational Models
  • His findings are summarised in Tables 2, 3a, 3b,
    4 5.

17
Home work Due Tutorial 2
  • Your goal is to find three educational
institutions that correspond to three of the 8
    models described by Hanna.
  • Corporate university
  • University/industry strategic alliance
  • Degree/certification competency-based university
  • Global multinational universities
  • Traditional University
  • Extended traditional university
  • For profit adult centred universities
  • Distance education/technology based university

18
Home work Due Tutorial 2
  • Justify your selections by using the input
    criteria used by Hanna.
  • Philosophy
  • Mission
  • Funding
  • Curricula
  • Instruction
  • Faculty
  • Library
  • Students
  • Learning Technology
  • Physical Facilities
  • Productivity Outcomes
  • Governance
  • Accreditation.

19
Home work Due Tutorial 2
  • If you find that you cannot fully resolve one of
your institutions to a single model indicate the
criteria which are creating problems for you.
  • Can you suggest a better way to rate different
    organisational models
