Summary
  • During the 1997-1998 El Nino, remotely sensed
observations have provided a truly unprecedented
description of the complete life cycle of a major
    El Nino event
  • The study of El Nino is inherently
    multi-disciplinary
  • Space-based observations of SST, surface winds,
sea level, precipitation, water vapor, ocean
color, land vegetation, smoke, and fires are
yielding a global context to the
ocean-atmosphere-land interactions of the El Nino
    event of the century
  • This suite of observations represents a
significant complement to the in situ TAO array
and hence the need for improved integration of
such remotely-sensed and in situ observations.
  • The extent to which the satellite observations
advance prediction skill is not clear
