Examples of Green Infrastructure
  • Public open space parks, greenways
  • Private open space farm fields, vineyards,
    orchards, woodlots, lakes
  • Both publicly and privately owned open space
contributes to our perception of the balance
between open space and developed land

13
History, Continued
  • Green infrastructure is a part of quality of life
    and rural landscapes
  • Usually excluded from plans and is land just
    waiting to be developed

14
Why is Green Infrastructure Important?
15
Builds our Sense of Place
  • Think about a place or community you feel
attached to what makes it unique? What do you
    like about it?

16
Sense of Place
  • Helps us define quality of life
  • Helps us define community
  • Facilitates and contains the activities that
    create community
  • Defines the visual character of rural working
    landscapes
  • Vegetation and open space have a quieting effect

17
Green Infrastructure Enhances Property Values
  • Monon Trail and other greenways in Indianapolis
have increased value of homes (CUPE study)
  • Average premium paid for house within ½ mile of
    greenway trail 4,384.
  • Average premium paid for house within ½ mile of
    conservation corridor 5,317.

18
Green Infrastructure Provides Economic Benefits
  • Owners of small businesses rank recreation, parks
and open space as the highest priority in
choosing a location for their new business
    (Crompton, 1997)
  • 1999 Economic Impact of Open Space in New
Hampshire study shows that each acre of open
space provides 1500 of economic benefit to the
    state and communities
