- EMRA has been around since the inception of
emergency medicine - In spring 1974, a small group of residents went
to Dallas for the Fourth Annual Meeting of the
University Association for Emergency Medical
(Later to become the Society for Academic
Emergency Medicine, (SAEM)) - While there, Joseph F. Waeckerle, MD, a resident
from Kansas City General, shared his idea to a
few other residents about forming a organization
for residents - That afternoon EMRA was born

- EMRA has been involved in the development and
advancement of emergency medicine - To this day, EMRA remains the largest
independent resident organization in the world - We have built and maintained relationships with
all players in emergency medicine to ensure that
the voice of emergency medicine residents is
always clearly and consistently heard.
