the environment. He holds the Henry Semat
Professorship in Theoretical Physics at the City
College and the Graduate Center of the City
University of New York. He has lectured around
the world and his Ph. D. level textbooks are

well as the time, anywhere in the world and in
    all weather conditions.
  • Intelligent Transportation System (ITS)
  • ??????
  • ITS is a comprehensive transportation
management system that is based on the advanced
    technology of information,

8
  • data communications, electronic sensing,
electronic control and computer handling etc. It
can provide real-time, accurate and efficient
information. It includes the system of outing and
    transportation management, the demand management
for outing, the operation system of public
    transportation, the operation system of
commercial vehicles, the electronic toll system,
the emergency management system and the control
and safety system of vehicles. It also provided
the 29 services for the consumers.

Warm-up Questions
  • How important was the automobile industry in the
    20th century?
  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of
    driving a car?
  • What will happen to cars and roads in the 21st
    century?
  • What hopes do you have for the future of smart
    cars?
  • What are the advantages of smart highways?

10
Summary
  • The text tells us great changes in the
automobile industry which will take place in
future. Advanced technology will enable smart
cars to help eliminate traffic accidents,
determine their own precise locations and warn of
traffic jams. With the aid of GPS and
"telematics", it will be possible to build smart
highways, thus benefiting human beings in more
than one way. It will be more convenient for us
to work, live and travel than before.

11
Writing Style
  • The text can be an exposition which begins with
the discussion of car accidents, the annoying
problems such as getting lost and getting stuck
in traffic that are familiar to most of the
readers. Then the author goes on to explain how
smart cars solve these frustrating problems. From
here he leads the readers to the smart highways
that are relatively new to them. The author goes
from the easy and the familiar to the new and the
complicated in the description and explanation of
the functions and the development of smart cars.
He ends the story with a blueprint of smart cars
    before readers.

12
True or False Statements
  • There are so many people killed in the car
accidents that car accidents reports can be found
    in newspaper nearly everyday.
  • A smart car can alert the driver if he becomes
    drowsy.
  • The computer in the car will totally eliminate
the cases of getting lost and getting stuck in
    traffic.
  • The computer in the car sends out a radio signal
that can be detected by a satellite.
  • By establishing the relation between the
rotations in the steering wheel and the cars
position on a map, the computer can tell us where
    the car is.
