• There is increasing evidence that Zinc plays a
  role as a cellular messenger.
• We are able to measure this through the
  development of sensitive fluorimetric probes to
  measure zinc extracellularly and intracellularly.

• It is important when studying Zinc to make sure
  the probe is specific and selective to Zn and be
  able to control other ions such as Ca and Mg in
  the solution being tested.
• Measuring Zn in samples with probes designed for
  Ca and Mg is complicated because Zn has to
  compete with the binding of Ca and Mg to the
  probe.

• The fact that many dont take notice of the Zn
  fluorescent probes affinity to Ca and Mg and this
  might explain why other laboratories are having
  discrepancies when measuring synaptically
  released Zinc.

• Some of the Zn fluorescence indicators to be
  tested are FluoZin-1, Newport Green, FluoZin-3,
  zinpyr-2 and a new probe from Japan Zn AF-2.
• Also selective Ca fluorescence indicators such as
  Fura-2, Calcium Green-1 and Fluo-3 will be tested
  for both Ca and Zn.
