Developmental Disabilities Institute Capital
Campaign
Hope has no barriers.

Who is DDI?
  • DDI is a not-for-profit agency headquartered in
    Smithtown
  • More than 30 locations throughout Suffolk and
    Nassau
  • Serves nearly 1,000 children and adults with a
diagnosis of an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
  • Serves 400 children adults with other
    developmental disabilities
  • DDI is the largest provider of services for
individuals with Autism on Long Island.
  • Provides educational, vocational, and residential
programs, as well as medical, dental services and
    other clinical services.

3
DDI Is Growing
  • DDI HAS NOW BEGUN AN AMBITIOUS MULTI-MILLION
    DOLLAR CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM
  • Construction of several new facilities and
    residences
  • Significant renovations and reconstruction of
    many of our existing buildings
  • To date, over 7 million has been raised and
    committed to these projects.
  • Funding has been made possible by various
government funded revenue streams, as well as
    several significant private and legislative
    grants solicited by DDI Foundation.

4
Completed Projects
  • Renovation of our Childrens Residential Program
    sites located at Hollywood Drive
  • Renovations/relocation of our Adult Day Program
sites in Smithtown, Hauppauge and Riverhead
  • Opening new Adult Day sites in Holbrook and
    Nesconset
  • Redesign and expansion of the parking lots at our
Hollywood Drive site, to reduce congestion and
    accommodate increased demand

5
Completed Projects- contd
  • A number of Pre-School and School age classrooms
and the gymnasiums received renovations and
    cosmetic upgrades.
  • Improved lighting, heating and air conditioning,
    interior finishes, furnishings and energy
    efficient windows installed.
  • The Little Plains campus was converted to natural
gas heating, replacing its outmoded and
    environmentally unsound oil-fired heating plant
  • Through the generosity of CA, IBM and the US
Customs Service, DDI has literally transformed
the ability of the 1,500 children and adults we
serve every day to use computers linked to the
Internet, gaining the immeasurable benefits of
high technology and communications never before
    available to them

6
DDI is creating new residences
  • Addition of three homes for 18 adults in the past
    two years
  • Two additional homes, serving 12 individuals,
    scheduled to open in 2009
  • A third home has been purchased and is awaiting
final approval from New York State to open during
2009 as a home for 6 young adults transitioning
out of our Childrens Residential Program
  • Two additional homes have been submitted for
approval for DDIs development in 2010 and 2011
that will serve 12 more individuals

7
Future Plans
  • We are heartened by the progress we have made to
    date
  • However, we have significant needs to renovate
our largest and oldest building- Little Plains
    School in Huntington
  • Millions of dollars worth of essential capital
improvements are needed to renovate and modernize
our Little Plains School, which educates over 400
    pre-school and school-age children.
  • New York State Education funds are not available
for the majority of these renovations
  • Therefore, the time has come for a focused
Capital Campaign to raise funds from private
donors to secure the future of DDI s largest
school, more importantly, the future of our
    children.

This will require us to seek
  • Major gifts from parents of children and adults
served by us and from individual donors committed
    to the future of DDI.
  • Grants from federal, state and local governmental
    entities.
  • Competitive grants from private foundations and
    corporations.

10
Our Call to Action
  • DDI is seeking to raise 5.7 million over five
years to fund urgently needed improvements for
the Little Plains campus in Huntington.
  • Capital Campaign Goal
  • General construction categories have been
determined and prioritized. The sequence of
these projects has been specifically organized to
create an orderly approach to construction
    activities.
