Title: Born with a Bang An Introduction to Exploring the Universe

1
Born with a BangAn Introduction to Exploring the
Universe
  • By Ms. Frattini

2
With You Everything is Gas
  • What are those sparkly dots??

3
(1) Once you were a tiny speck.
(2) But you couldnt stay small.
(3) I, too, had a special day when I was born.
(4) I was bursting with wild and dazzling dreams
of galaxies, stars and planets in radiant colors-
4
Piercing Blue
Molten Red
Bright Yellow
5
(5) In other dreams, I saw strange creatures-
(6) Then I suddenly realized, I could BE the
things in my dreams.
6
(7) I BURST into a grapefruit-sized fireball!
(8) In a flash space EXPLODED inside me with
unimaginable power.
(9) YES!! I had turned energy into the very
first things- Tiny particles
7
(10) Every time I turned energy into a particle,
its exact opposite, an anti-particle, would
appear.
8
(11) I had made my very first atoms. They were
atoms of hydrogen.
(12) These enormous hydrogen globs stared
igniting into Mother stars!
(13) I was shaping myself into galaxies.
9
(14) Mysterious black holes appeared at the
center of many galaxies.
10
(15) Your mother Star mixed together bunches of
hydrogen and baked them at three billion degrees
into lots of different new elements, or building
blocks.
(16) Your Mother Star ripped herself apart in a
massive explosion- A supernova
(17) Whoosh! Your Sun flared into life! Born,
too, from clumps of stardust were nine young
planetary pups!
11
(18) Particles create hydrogen by sticking
together, hydrogen clouds compress themselves
into stars, and stars gather in gleaming galaxies.
(19) The third pup inside the young planetary
pack, your Earth, was a burning red ball of
molten stardust.
(20) The ocean bubbled and boiled. Hot red
rocks oozed up through rips in the ocean floor.
12
(21) Did I have enough building blocks to turn
myself into creatures?
(22) So much still had to happen before I could
turn myself into you.

Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star
  • Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
  • How Ive wondered what we are
  • Now I know youre made of dust
  • Now I know youre just like us
  • Twinkle Twinkle, oh so far
  • Now I know I am a star

Teachers Pages
  • Target Audience Middle school special education
    science class
  • Overall Goal Why is it said that we are made up
    of stardust?
  • Objectives
  • SWBAT
  • List the 1st element created.
  • Describe how the natural elements were created.
  • Identify how the Earth was created.
  • Describe the key words and how they relate to
    unit.

Storytelling Chart
Item Rationale
Star Wars Theme Students are familiar with theme and will immediately think of space.
Timon Pumba Students are familiar with the characters. The audio clip directly relates to astronomy
Numbered Lines Each student receives a series of different numbers. When their numbers come up, they have to read their part. This forces the students to actively interact with the story.
Pictures The pictures are visually stimulating to the students.
Highlighted Words/Car Horns The highlighted words help the students focus on the key terms that they need to know for the astronomy unit. The horn goes off every time a key term comes up. Some of the key terms are not printed so it forces the students to listen to the story.
Twinkle, Twinkle The song concludes the lesson and it is familiar tune but has a twist to it. The students can remember the tune to answer the key question Why is it said that we are made up of stardust?

Science Standards
  • STANDARD 5.6 (CHEMISTRY) ALL STUDENTS WILL GAIN
AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE STRUCTURE AND BEHAVIOR OF
    MATTER.
  • A. Structure and Properties of Matter
  • 1. Recognize that about 100 different elements
have been identified and most materials on Earth
are made of a few of them.
  • 2. Know that all matter is composed of atoms that
may join together to form molecules.

The presentation spirals back to concepts
previous learned and begins to connect the
concepts together so the students begin to see
that the concepts learned throughout the year are
not separate entities but all connected.
17
  • STANDARD 5.9 (ASTRONOMY and SPACE SCIENCE) ALL
STUDENTS WILL GAIN AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE
ORIGIN, EVOLUTION, AND STRUCTURE OF THE UNIVERSE.
  • B. Solar System
  • 1. Explain that our solar system coalesced from a
nebular cloud of gas and dust left from exploding
    stars.
  • C. Stars
  • 1. Understand that the sun is a star and that it
    shares characteristics with other stars.
  • 2. Describe the physical characteristics, stages
of development, and the apparent motions of
    stars.
  • D. Galaxies and Universe
  • 1. Know that the universe consists of many
billions of galaxies, each including billions of
    stars.
  • 2. Cite evidence to describe the scientific
theory of the origin of the universe and the
    current explanations of its evolution.

The presentation is an introduction to the
astronomy unit. The above concepts are
introduced in the story.
18
Language Arts Standards
  • STANDARD 3.4 (LISTENING) ALL STUDENTS WILL LISTEN
ACTIVELY TO INFORMATION FROM A VARIETY OF SOURCES
    IN A VARIETY OF SITUATIONS.
  • STANDARD 3.3 (SPEAKING) ALL STUDENTS WILL SPEAK
IN CLEAR, CONCISE, ORGANIZED LANGUAGE THAT VARIES
IN CONTENT AND FORM FOR DIFFERENT AUDIENCES AND
    PURPOSES.

The presentation involves the students to listen
to the story to find key terms. Some of the words
are listed visually and some are within the
presentation.
The presentation involves the students because
they participate in the reading of the story.
19
Standards
  • STANDARD 3.5 (VIEWING AND MEDIA LITERACY) ALL
STUDENTS WILL ACCESS, VIEW, EVALUATE, AND RESPOND
TO PRINT, NONPRINT, AND ELECTRONIC TEXTS AND
    RESOURCES.

The presentation allows the students to view a
story in a different perspective. The
presentation is viewed on a large screen and all
students are able to view it. The story is
animated to make it more to life.
