33Most of current wall in this area north of
Beijing was rebuilt in the 1400s during the Ming
Dynasty (1368-1644). The rock is this area is
granite although the wall construction is
actually bricks.
The early construction of the Great Wall dates to
about the 6th century BC. At that time it was
mostly compacted earth.

50Inside the tomb
In 1966, the three skeletons originally placed
here (Wan Li and two wives ) were burned in a bon
fire by Red Guards. Few artifacts remain from the
original tomb. The Ming tombs have been ransacked
at least twiceonce in 1644 then later by the
Manchu's. Although, this specific tomb was not
ransacked and excavated from 1956 to 1958.
