Function and Issues

• -controls water pollution
• -sets standards for water quality
• -assigns permits to point source pollution
• -requires technology-based standards
• -improves the quality of polluted rivers, lakes,
  wetlands, and seas
• -separate sewer systems for storm drainage
• -authorization for research

Regulation and Enforcement

• Individual states and the EPA are responsible for
  regulating and enforcing the Clean Water Act, but
  states are inadequately doing so. To enforce the
  law, there are fines and permits, as well as
  prison time up to 15 years for knowing
  endangerment. individuals can bring a lawsuit
  against a violator, and states can request EPA
  involvement if required or requested.
