Title: 1' What you will be doing in this lab

1
1. What you will be doing in this lab?
  • To Plot Pump Characteristic(capacity) Curve-
    Pressure Head(m) versus Flowrate(m3/s)

Pressure Head (m)
Q Flowrate (m3/s)
2
2. What is Pump Pressure Head (m)?
  • We have to look at EGL.
  • Pump Pressure Head is pressure head difference
between pressure before water flow into a pump
(Pin) and water flow out of a pump (Pout).
  • Flowrate is rate of water flow thru the pump.
    (Voume / Time)

3. Can the water flow from Tank A to Tank B?
  • Below is the scenario of lab equipment.
  • Before we start, answer this question Can the
water flow from tank A to tank B without the
    pump?
  • So the pump provide pressure or head to EGL so
that water can flow from tank A to tank B.

4
4. Start the test Single Pump Chacteristic Curve
  • Fill tank B with 5 liter of water and time it.
Use the valve to control flowrate, start with
    full opening of the valve.
  • Get the Volume, time, Pin and Pout. This wikl
give us Pressure Head and Flowrate.
  • Volume(5liter)/Time ? Flowrate(liter/sec) ?
    Flowrate(m3/s)
  • Pout Pin X Bar ? Pascal ? Pressure Head(m)

Take at least 8 sets of data. Start with Full
until No Flow. Increment between the two.
5
5. Collect data in table format.
1 bar 10.2 meter 1 liter/s 0.001 m3/s
6
6. Plot the Pump Characteristic Curve.
  • The data in the table will be able to produce
    below pump characteristic curve.

PUMP IN SERIES
  • Plot Pump Chacteristic Curve for pump in series.
  • Same process as single pipe but Pin is before 1st
pump in series and and Pout is after 2nd pump in
    the series.

PUMP IN PARALLEL
  • Plot Pump Chacteristic Curve for pump in
    parallel.
  • Same process as single pipe but Pin is before 1st
and 2nd pump in parallel and and Pout is after
1st and 2nd pump in the parallel.

Open Channel Flowrate Measurement
  • In the open channel, we need to measure flowrate.
  • To do so, we will use equipment such as weir,
flume etc. These equipments depend on flowrate
    equation
  • The flowrate equation depend on
  • Q f(Coefficient, Height, Width or Angle)
  • Our test in the lab is to determine the C
Coefficient of the equipment. Once known, we can
calculate flowrate for any condition using the
    specific equipment.
