Title: Issues That Divide Brethren

1
Issues That Divide Brethren
  • Women Wearing The Covering In The Assembly

2
1 Corinthians 111-16
  • 1 Be ye imitators of me, even as I also am of
Christ. 2Now I praise you that ye remember me in
all things, and hold fast the traditions, even as
I delivered them to you. 3But I would have you
know, that the head of every man is Christ and
the head of the woman is the man and the head of
Christ is God. 4Every man praying or prophesying,
having his head covered, dishonoreth his head.
5But every woman praying or prophesying with her
head unveiled dishonoreth her head for it is one
and the same thing as if she were shaven.

3
1 Corinthians 111-16
  • 6For if a woman is not veiled, let her also be
shorn but if it is a shame to a woman to be
shorn or shaven, let her be veiled. 7For a man
indeed ought not to have his head veiled,
forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God
but the woman is the glory of the man. 8For the
man is not of the woman but the woman of the
man 9for neither was the man created for the
woman but the woman for the man 10for this
cause ought the woman to have a sign of authority
on her head, because of the angels.

4
1 Corinthians 111-16
  • 11Nevertheless, neither is the woman without the
man, nor the man without the woman, in the Lord.
12For as the woman is of the man, so is the man
also by the woman but all things are of God.
13Judge ye in yourselves is it seemly that a
woman pray unto God unveiled? 14Doth not even
nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long
hair, it is a dishonor to him? 15But if a woman
have long hair, it is a glory to her for her
hair is given her for a covering. 16But if any
man seemeth to be contentious, we have no such
custom, neither the churches of God.

5
Is Subject Of 1 Corinthians 111-16 Still Binding
Today?
  • Absolutely
  • The Question That Must Be Answered
  • What Is Subject ?

6
Multifaceted Subject
  • Those who believe women should wear it
  • Not united on who, when and where to wear it
  • Some say it must be worn in the assembly
  • Some say it must be worn in private only
  • Some say hat is proper covering
  • Some say it must be a veil that hangs down
  • Some say only Christian women were it
  • Some say even children should wear it
  • Basically broken into two categories
  • Those who believe veil binding on women today
  • Those who do not believe it binding on women
    today
  • Everything else hinges on these two

7
What Is Not The Subject Of These Verses?
  • Women wearing hat in assembly
  • Women wearing any covering in assembly
  • Not even the covering itself
  • Proper conduct by women in the assembly
  • The assembly nowhere mentioned in text
  • Some extend this to assembly be proximity of
    verses
  • It is close to Vs. 18 which discusses the
    assembly
  • Or it is between 1 Cor 10 and 1 Cor 1117-34
    Lords Supper
  • Some say Gal 610 must apply to church because
    Vs. 2
  • Others insist instrumental music 1 Cor. 147-8
    23
  • Proximity is not a legitimate basis for including
    it in the assembly

8
The Subject Of These Verses1 Corinthians 113
  • 3But I would have you know, that the head of
every man is Christ and the head of the woman is
the man and the head of Christ is God.
  • Headship in the kingdom
  • How to demonstrate it at Corinth

9
The Word Head
  • 2776 kephale kef-al-ay
  • 1) the head, both of men and often of animals.
Since the loss of the head destroys life, this
word is used in the phrases relating to capital
    and extreme punishment.
  • 2) metaph. anything supreme, chief, prominent
  • 2a) of persons, master lord of a husband in
    relation to his wife
  • 2b) of Christ the Lord of the husband and of the
    Church
  • 2c) of things the corner stone

10
Headship Is Subject
  • Everything else stems from this subject
  • It is a part of every verse in this section
  • It is the subject of every part of this section
  • Teaching on mans headship of woman
  • Adam first formed then eve 1 Tim. 213
  • Woman is of the man 1 Cor. 18
  • Woman is for the man 1 Cor. 19
  • Woman was deceived first in fall 1 Tim 214
  • Curse Thy desire shall be toward thy husband, he
shall rule over thee Gen. 316
  • Weaker vessel 1 Pet. 35-6
  • Husband is the head of the wife Eph. 522-23

Headship In The Kingdom1 Corinthians 111-3
God
Christ
Man
Woman
12
The Problem At Corinth1 Corinthians 115-10
God
Demonstrated by woman removing the customary sign
of subjection
Christ
Man Woman
13
Man Must Not Abdicate His RoleVs. 4-7
  • Man praying or prophesying covered head
  • The covering is a sign of subornation
  • A sign of femininity and subjection
  • Women were to wear it
  • Men were not to wear it
  • Women did not put on the veil to worship
  • They normally wore the veil as a sign of
    subjection
  • As they do in many of the middle eastern
    countries today
  • By wearing this symbol he abdicates his position
    of headship
  • And dishonors his head, Christ who revealed mans
    headship
  • Hence the admonition does not even nature teach
    you
  • If a man has long hair it dishonors him Vs. 14
  • It breaks down the distinction between the sexes

14
Woman Must Not Abandon Her RoleVs. 4-7
  • She wore a sign of her recognition of subjection
  • A sign of her femininity and subordination to man
  • She was committing a sign of masculinity
  • She was casting off her sign of subordination
  • The veil was a custom of femininity at Corinth
  • Sustained by the context, which we will study in
    part 2
  • Because of the angels stern warning Vs. 10
  • A reference to angels is context of subjection
    Jude 6
  • The angels who did not keep their domain
  • But abandoned their proper abode
  • They are kept in eternal bonds under darkness for
    the judgment

15
By Removing The DemonstrationOf There Submission
To Man
  • Question is not
  • Should the women at Corinth put on the veil
  • Question is
  • The women at Corinth should not have taken it off
  • Miraculous gifts emboldened the women
  • To cast off their veil at Corinth
  • To remove their sign of subjection
  • To show they were not under mans headship

16
Paul Gives Reasons For This
  • Woman is of the man Vs. 8
  • Same argument as 1 Tim 213
  • Man was formed first the Eve
  • Being made first is one reason for headship
  • Woman is for the man Vs. 9
  • The word for 1223 dia dee-ah
  • Means for the sake of
  • A helper suitable for man Gen 218
  • Waman was deceived in the transgression 1 Tim
    24
  • Womans being deceived reason for subjection to
    man
  • The curse to woman husband shall rule over thee
    Gen 316
  • Peter gives like warning 1 Pet 35-6
  • Mans headship taught by Paul Eph 522-23

17
Sexes Should Not Confuse Their Roles
  • Man
  • Not to do anything that removes the distinction
  • Adopting the feminine custom of Corinth does that
  • Even nature teaches that distinction Vs. 14
  • Woman
  • Must not remove the sign of her subjection
  • Even miraculous gifts should not embolden women
  • Embolden them to remove the customary sign
  • The sign of her role assigned by God for various
    reasons
  • Even nature teaches that distinction Vs. 14

18
Summary Part 1

    subjection
