New WG Charter
  • Description
  • Build upon the original charter to develop a
CAPWAP protocol to provide interoperability among
    WLAN controller backend architectures
  • Architecture Scope
  • Local MAC
  • Split MAC
  • Protocol Scope
  • Define control plane
  • Data Forwarding
  • Extensibility to other IEEE 802 access
    technologies, especially 802.16.

4
New WG Charter
  • Goals/Deliverables
  • Define a set of Objectives based on the
architecture taxonomy work that list the
    requirements for an interoperable CAPWAP
    protocol.
  • Evaluate a set of candidate protocols as a basis
    for the CAPWAP protocol.
  • Develop a CAPWAP protocol standard.
  • Create MIBs to support the CAPWAP protocol.

5
Objectives Draft
  • Provides a Vendor and Customer perspective
  • Based on the Architecture Taxonomy draft
  • Includes Operational requirements Customer,
    Enterprise, hotspot
  • Lists IEEE AP functional features to be
    distributed
  • IEEE liaison help as needed
  • Reviewed by IEEE and IETF Expert review
  • Provisions to avoid stalemate
  • CLOSURE of WG if consensus on a stable set of
Objectives is not met by May, 2005 milestone to
    IESG.

6
Objective Draft format dates
  • Why Objectives? More informative than a
    requirement.
  • Description of requirement
  • Includes motivation for requirement benefit to
    the protocol
  • Applicability to problem statement
  • Classification and Prioritization into categories
  • Mandatory and Accepted
  • Desirable
  • Rejected
  • Mandated by Charter to be the format of the
    Objectives draft
  • Extensibility to 802.16 not to affect deadline.
  • 1st WGLC Feb, 2005. Hard deadline
  • Submit to IEEE for experts Review, Feb, 2005.
  • 2nd WGLC, April, 2005

7
CAPWAP Eval Draft and dates
  • Deadline for Protocol Proposals, March 05
  • CAPWAP Evaluation draft
  • 1st draft June 05
  • Team of editors, one person to evaluate each
    protocol according to the objectives
  • Open WG discussion
  • Conclusion Protocol Selection
