30International Promotion
In order to showcase the cultural heritage and
natural resources of Taiwan to the world as well
as to complement the existing Chinese portal
(http//digitalarchives.tw/) , we have created a
new Digital Taiwan Culture Nature English
portal (http//culture.teldap.tw/).
30
31Challenges
- What information would international users be
interested in? - How should we present these digital collections?
31
32Difficult Position TELDAP is Placed in
- TELDAP Union Catalog
- Containing more than 2 million records
- Item level metadata only
- For users
- Most of the international users are not familiar
with the digitized contents in Taiwan, it would
be hard for them to access the information
through item level metadata.
32
33Solution
- Establish Collection Level Description
- Collection descriptions are a way of providing
roadmaps to enable users to navigate the
landscape more effectively.
34What is Collection Level Description?
- Collection-Level Description (CLD) A description
of a collection - A CLD is a structured, open, standardised form of
metadata providing a high-level description of an
aggregation of individual items.
35Functions of CLD
- Enable collection provider to
- Disclose information about the existence and
availability of digital contents - Evaluate collection development efforts
- Control holdings more effectively
- Share collection information with other archival
institutions - Unearth fields where collaborative management is
possible - Enable user to
- Discover cross-domain resources
- Navigate through copious heterogeneous and
distributed resources - Understand the general information of collection
promptly - Select collections based on summary descriptions
- Access the collection described through a portal
36Establish TELDAP Collection Level Description
- Step 1 Survey CLD related projects and standards

- UKOLN Simple Collection Description
36
37Establish TELDAP Collection Level Description
- Step 2User needs assessment
- Interview resource users
- Interview resource managers
- Step 3Inventory TELDAP resources
- Inventory TELDAP outputs and resources
- Step 4Identify and select collections to be
described
38The TELDAP Collection Level Metadata

48Future Works
- To identify and select more collections
- To add new facetsex media type and location
will also be considered in the future. - To set up online registration and management
system - To continue multilingual (English, Spanish,
Japanese) content translation in order to broaden
international public access.
