12Course Focus
- Please remember that this is a CONCEPT course
and that the emphasis is on understanding IDEAS
and not on memorizing pages of text!
13What do we mean by ideas?
- Heres an example from your textbook pages 4-6
(Task 2) on How Was English Taught in the Past? - Do you think students will need to remember every
detail such as how the lessons were conducted,
homework, types of tasks, etc.? - What is most important is that they understand
that communicative language teaching requires a
change from traditional methods.
14What do we mean by concepts?
- Students do not need to memorize examples, but
you should understand why they were included.
Learn the concepts. - A concept is an underlying idea or principle that
can be applied in various cases. - Make sure that they are clear on the main idea
and not just the details. Do you want your
students to see the leaf or the entire tree?
15Study Plan (12 hours/week)
- Read the units and try to do the tasks in the
book. (Hours?) - Do the assignments on the e-learning platform.
(Hours?) - Make good use of class time. Review as needed.
(Hours?)
16How to Study
- When in doubt, read the instructions.
- Page vi states that this course is all about
learning teaching strategies and skills. - Doing the tasks assigned will promote
- awareness,
- understanding and
- application of concepts related to ELT.
- Students are required to keep a DIARY in which
they record their observations and evaluations of
the results of application of different teaching
methods.
17A Diary?!
- This is a big part of students professional
project. - Record thoughts, observations and evaluations as
they study each unit. Apply what is learned as
they go through the course. - At the end of each unit, they will need to answer
some questions based on what was recorded in your
diary.
18Preparing for the Exam
- There are about 20 tasks in each unit. 20 tasks
in 7 days means that each student should complete
2-3 tasks per day to keep up. - Completing the tasks is a good way to prepare for
the exam. - Exercises and discussion in class should help to
reinforce concepts. - Dont forget the homework on the e-platform!

26Class Atmosphere

a lively and fun atmosphere that reinforces
learning. - What kind of class do you want to have?
27Study Groups
- Help students to get organized into study groups
according to your schedule, interests and
learning styles. - Groups should discuss topics of special interest,
help members complete tasks and prepare for the
exam. They can also experiment with their
knowledge of teaching techniques on other group
members. - Groups can use BeiwaiOnline facilities to
exchange ideas and enrich the learning process.
28What do we do in the tutorial?
- Get the main points out of the book.
- Discuss ideas using examples from the text and
from our own experience. - Reinforce concepts by applying them in class.
Practice some of the techniques.
29FAQ 1 Do I need to memorize examples in the book?
- Answer ELTM textbooks I and II provide a wealth
of examples so that you can see how to apply
communicative principles in your teaching. The
models can teach you how to express objectives or
describe activities but there is no reason for
you to memorize entire lesson plans. Instead,
you should learn the principles and how to design
your own creative lesson plans.
30FAQ 2 Do I really need to do all those tasks?
- Answer No one is going to spy over your shoulder
or check your book to make sure you have filled
everything in, but just as with any other course,
what you put into it is what you will get out of
it. The tasks are designed to help you go
through the thinking process that is key to
helping you to advance as a teacher.
31FAQ 3 Why does the book describe so many
activities?
- Answer The most difficult part of being a
teacher is often just coming up with new things
to do in class. Students and teachers both
benefit from variety. The wide range of
activities are provided to inspire and help you
in lesson planning and understanding practical
ways to implement communicative methodology.
32End of Tutor Orientation
- Thanks for your attention.
- Any questions?
- I wish you the best of success in teaching the
courses ELTM I and II.
