Overview

• The cell theory states that all cells come from
  pre-existing cells.
• New cells are made through cell division.
• The cell cycle is the sequence of growth and
  division of a cell.

INTERPHASE

• Majority of cells life is spent in Interphase
• Cell grows in size
• Chromosomes are duplicated in preparation for
  division

3 parts of Interphase

• G1 phase-cell grows and protein production is
  high
• S phase-DNA synthesis and replication
• G2 phase-Centrioles replicate cell prepares for
  division
• Moving on to MITOSIS!

MITOSIS

• After Interphase, cells enter MITOSIS!
• Mitosis is the process by which 2 daughter cells
  are formed (each with its own complete set of
  chromosomes)
• 4 distinct phases of Mitosis

PROPHASE

• First and longest phase of Mitosis
• Long, stringy chromatin coils up into visible
  chromosomes

• Chromosomes move to equator of spindle

ANAPHASE

• The centromeres are split and the sister
  chromatids are pulled apart to opposite poles of
  cells.

TELOPHASE

• Two distinct daughter cells are formed. The cells
  separate as the cell cycle proceeds into the next
  interphase.
