First, a definition

• Horizon scanning is an early warning system
  designed to alert planners and policy developers
  to emerging health technologies and the potential
  these may have. Horizon Scanning documents are
• Short, rapidly completed state of play
• As well as identifying new technologies, may
  point to under-used technologies and
  technological change
• Be used to control the introduction of new
  technologies
• Assist in long-term planning and resource
  allocation

Australia and New Zealand Horizon Scanning
Network (ANZHSN)

• An initiative of MSAC, the Department of Health
  Ageing and AHMAC
• Operated by HealthPACT (an MSAC subcommittee
  members are from State and Territory health
  departments, MSAC, ASERNIP-S, DoHA and the NZ
  Ministry of Health)
• Supported by the National Horizon Scanning Unit
  (NHSU), NET-S and NZHTA.

Adelaide Health Technology Assessment (AHTA)

• Established in 2001, AHTA conducts MSAC and PBAC
  reviews, authors guidelines and also conducts
  Horizon Scanning for AHMAC (is an ANZHSN
  collaborator)
• Provides Horizon Scanning on devices, diagnostics
  and programs

Australian Safety and Efficacy of New
Interventional Procedures Surgical

• A program run by the Australasian College of
  Surgeons and federally funded
• NET-S, a database managed by ASERNIP-S and the
  ACS, and a collaborative member of AZNHSN
• New surgical technologies and techniques
• Technologies and procedures already routinely
  practiced

New Zealand Health Technology Assessment (NZHTA)

• Established in 1997 by the New Zealand Ministry
  of Health to assist New Zealand health and
  disability services
• Provides Horizon Scanning as a contribution to
  the Ministrys participation in HealthPact.
