4Introduction
- Census results influences many political,
economic, and - social policies .
- 2006 census is Egyptian thirteenth census.
- This program facilitated reduced processing time.
-
-4-
5-
- Preliminary results of the 2006 Census were
published early in April 2007, three months
after the end of field work . - (ICR) and Optical Mark Reader (OMR) used to
capture - input data
5-
6Methodology
- 1- Method of Enumeration
- A - Defacto method was used .
- B - Three pretests.
- C Field Work
-
-6-
7- 2- New Features
- Decentralization
- SCANNER
- C. The Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
-7-
8- C. The Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
- (1) Producing maps of different scales
appropriate to each supervisory function to
achieve data coverage, check points of contact
and avoid overlapping or gapping missing areas. - (2) Validating field data and updating maps with
the - latest information
- (3) Jointing demographic data with digital maps
and - producing information maps represent many
indicators
-8-
9- D. Developing training system
- E. Increasing awareness
- Media campaign
- (2) Holding direct contacts with many communities
(universities, school, NGO , etc..). - F. Call center

10 Data Processing
Phase one Studying various methods of data
entry . Phase two Determining which Data
Base will be used. Phase three Creating
application programs needed for data processing.
Phase four Training on computer processing
activities. Phase five The tabulation
strategy and output.
-10-
11Technology Overview
- Intelligent Character Recognition (ICR) and
Optical Character Recognition (OCR. - CAPMAS developed the software to capture Arabic
(Hindu) numerals and separate Arabic alphabet.
-11
12 ICR Advantages
- Validation rules are included in the system to
validate and correct data. - Scanned forms are stored digitally thus
eliminating the need for physical storage of
paper forms. - It reduces employees needed required for data
entry. - Drop-out color improves the accuracy of
recognition.
-12-
13 Scanners
- Software for processing
- Module for scanning.
- Module for recognition.
- Module for correction.
- Module for verification and editing.
- Module for tabulation.

14 Challenges
Several Problems came up during the preparation
and implementation
(1) Designing documents. (2) Selecting scanners
type. (3) Choosing image software. (4)
Handwriting Variation.
-14
15- 1. Designing documents
- Paper and printing quality
- Drop-out color.
-15
16- 2. Selecting the scanner
- Types of scanner depends on
- Speed.
- Ability to handle multiple page.
- Thickness of papers .
- 3. Choosing the image software
- Many types of image software engines has
different accuracy . - Testing two different software to choose the
best one. - Application programs to be adapted with the
census data processing.
-16
17- 4. Handwriting Variation
- Difference hand-writing of the enumerators.
- Improve the recognition process .
- Using dictionary with different shapes of hand
writing.
-21-
18- Good Results of Scanning depends on
- Proper paper printing
- Proper supplies
- Quality Control Process.
-17-
19- WWW.CAPMAS.GOV.EG
- Census information dissemination
- Quick facts.
- Tables of Population, Housing, Building,
Establishments - on governorate level break down to
sheikhia,village level in - Excel

20- Output reports
- by Subjects.
- by Alphabetic.
- Soft copies and Hard copies
