3
The Archer
  • Sagittarius is known as The Archer, or half-man
    and half-horse.

4
  • Sagittarius lies by the center of our galaxy.
  • When you look at it, you are looking at the
    densest possible concentration of stars.
  • Sagittarius is filled with beautiful nebulae,
clusters, and star clouds and lies in the Milky
    Way.

5
Hard to find
  • Sagittarius is not the easiest constellation to
    find.
  • First, find Scorpios, the scorpion, which is easy
    to find.
  • Then, you will see the six stars that outline the
    bow and arrow.
  • Gamma, the head of the bow, is pointing at
Antares, the red-orange star that marks
    Scorpions heart.

6
  • Sagittarius is highest in the sky at midnight on
    July 7th.
  • The date the Sun is in Sagittarius is between
    December 18th and January 18th.

7
  • Sagittarius never rises high enough in the sky to
    be fully appreciated.
  • When you look at it through binoculars or a
telescope, it will take your breath away.

9
  • Sagittarius contains two of the most famous
    nebulae Lagoon nebulae and Trifid.

10
Lagoon Nebulae (M8)
  • Lagoon Nebulae is one of the brightest nebulae
    there is.
  • Fifth magnitude.
  • Lagoon Nebulae forms a triangle with Lambda and
    Mu.
  • Can be seen with just your eyes.
  • Only high-powered photographs bring out its true
beauty because your able to see tiny Bok
globules, on the way to becoming stars.

11
Lagoon Nebulae
  • 100 light years across
  • 5000 light years away
  • Named because of the shape of the dark lane
    running through it.

12
Trifid (M20)
  • Trifid is north of Lagoon nebulae.
  • When you look through binoculars, it appears as a
    small misty patch.
  • When looked at through a telescope, three dark
    dust lanes are revealed.

13
Trifid
14
Omega nebulae (M17)
  • On the northern border of Sagittarius, on the
    edge of the Milky Way.
  • Found by following a line between Mu and Gamma
    Scuti, in another constellation.
  • Sort of has the shape of the Greek letter omega.
  • Also called the Swan and Horseshoe nebulae.

15
Omega Nebulae
16
  • M24 (Small Sagittarius Star Cloud)
  • M18
  • South of Omega Nebulae.
  • Open cluster.
  • South of M18.
  • Neither a nebulae nor a cluster.
  • It is a general brightening of the Milky Way.

17
  • M23
  • M21
  • Makes a triangle with Mu and M24.
  • Open cluster.
  • Has 100 stars, up to ninth magnitude.
  • South of Trifid.
  • Similar to M23.

18
  • M54
  • M55
  • Globular.
  • Located close to Zeta.
  • Globular.
  • East of M54.
  • Looser condensation of stars than M54.
  • Counted in thousands, unlike M22.

19
  • Sagittarius has more than 20 globular clusters,
    1/10 of the number known.
  • Globulars tend to congregate around the centers
    of galaxies.

20
M22
  • Top globular.
  • Forms a triangle with Lambda and Phi.
  • M22 is a dense grouping of millions of stars.
  • Sixth magnitude.
  • Looks great when viewed through binoculars or a
telescope, but can also be seen with the eyes
    alone.

21
  • Sagittarius is a beautiful constellation. It is
full of nebulae, stars, star clouds, dust lanes,
and many more brilliant, extraordinary things. If
you would take the time to really look at it, you
will realize just how amazing it really is.
