Planning for dissemination
Who needs the information? Why do they need
it? What information do they need?
3Planning Dissemination
Target audience who do we want to reach? What information do they need? How will this information contribute to our overall goal and water demand management? What will our final products look like? What actions should we be taking at this point?
4Examining policy what is policy?
- An assertion of intents or goals
- Standing plans through which an organization
regulates, controls and promotes services or
otherwise influences matters within its sphere of
influence - A strategy designed to solve or ameliorate a
problem - A norm of conduct
- A result or output of decision-making process
5Policies should be
- Evidence informed
- Based on the best available systematic
information about the problem (and therefore
accumulated research) - Inclusive recognizes the interests of range of
policy stakeholders - Strategic contributes to overall mission and
vision - Realistic takes into account different realities
faced by implementers - Flexible to be applied in different settings
- Outcome focused.
6Different levels of policy
- Legislative policy enables allocation of funds
for major initiatives across an area of
government. - Large-scale policy provides direction for
implementation across many sites or a system. - Local policy provides directions for
implementation at a single site.
7Examining policy
In what way are you responsible for contributing
to policy development? What do you need to make
happen for policy change to come about?
8Examining policy
- It is important to remember that policy decision
making is not made at a single time. - Different parties add their inputs based on their
own experiences, communications, knowledge, etc. - This has implications for new knowledge (from
research and from evaluation).
9Planning for policy
What is the policy framework that exists? Is there an enabling framework at the national / local level? How does your research contribution fit into the wider policy framework? Who should be involved in policy formulation and implementation? When should they be involved? How can they be involved?
