Title: Hertfordshire County Cricket Association

1
Hertfordshire County Cricket Association
  • A Pathway to Project Funding for Affiliated Clubs

2
What Project?
  • Do you want to improve your playing surface?
  • Do you need better machinery?
  • Do you want to improve, repair or increase your
    Nets/Practice facility?
  • Do you have a building project in mind?

3
Demonstrating Need
  • You are entering a Competitive Venture.
  • Funders are increasingly demanding an
    evidence-based proposal.
  • Your project therefore needs to be targeted to a
    specific need.
  • Be clear about the difference you want to make
    with your project.
  • Establish a strong and clear need for your
    project.

4
Establishing a Need
  • This could be through research, questionnaires
    etc.
  • It could be through an evaluation of current
    services
  • It could be because there is no such service in
your area, e.g. no Girls Cricket

5
Plan the Project Accurately
  • What you are going to do?
  • How you are going to do it including the
    resources you will need?
  • When will you do each thing you need to do?
  • Who will be responsible both for individual
activities and for the overall management of the
    project?
  • How will you know you have achieved it?

6
Cost Your Project Accurately
  • Provide a detailed breakdown of costs.
  • Get 2 or 3 written quotations wherever possible.
  • Demonstrate how your project represents value for
    money.
  • Emphasise your level of need for financial
    support.
  • Make sure your application is honest and you
request only the funding you need.

7
A SMART Project .
  • . is one that is
  • S Specific
  • M Measurable
  • A Achievable
  • R Realistic
  • T Time Based

8
A SMART Project
  • Specific
  • You must have a definite project that your funder
can see the reason for, and can evaluate the
success or failure of the result.
  • Measurable
  • Can you demonstrate that
  • the project will make the difference you desire.
  • the amount of money you are asking for will do
    the job.
  • your funder will be able to see the success of
    his investment.

9
A SMART Project
  • Achievable
  • Do you have the manpower and skills to complete
    the project?
  • Do you have the will to do it and to maintain it
    in the future?
  • Realistic
  • Do you have the management skills, knowledge and
    time to complete the project?
  • If not, are you intending to buy them in, and
have you included this cost in your estimates?

10
A SMART Project
  • Time-Based
  • Are you applying long enough before you intend to
start work for your Funders to consider your
application and get the funds to you?
  • Are you going to do the work at the right time in
    the year?
  • Have you informed your workforce and obtained
    their agreement?

11
Sources of Funding
  • Besides the ECB there are many other sources
  • Raising money from the public
  • Government Central and Local
  • Grant making Trusts
  • Specialist loans and grants
  • Businesses

12
Where to Get Advice
  • First contact the HCCA Development Team through
the Contact Us page on this website
  • Read the ECB booklet Sources of Grant Aid and
Funding for Cricket Clubs, available at
    www.ecb.co.uk/ecb/publications
  • The Herts Groundsmens Association can arrange
pitch inspections and advise on drainage,
    machinery, etc.
  • Get in touch with Community and Voluntary
    Services in your area

13
Community and Voluntary Services
  • Finding funders is increasingly competitive, so
    be professional in your approach.
  • CVS is a professional organisation run by your
    Local Authority
  • You can meet them at a Fit for Funding Evening
    or Afternoon
  • They can help you at every stage of your
    application

14
Help Available from CVS
  • Matching your application to an appropriate
    Funder
  • Identifying suitable Funders
  • Giving you details of their criteria
  • Giving you access to Grantfinders (a subscribers
    only database)
  • Helping with writing your application
  • Checking your application before you submit it.

15
The Funding Process
  • Is your Club ready for your project?
  • Your proposed Funders will ask themselves
  • Are these people we are about to give our money
    to-
  • - responsible
  • - well-organised
  • - knowledgeable about what they are doing and
who they are trying to help?

16
Wheres the Proof?
  • You will need documentary evidence of -
  • a Governing Document such as a Club Constitution
  • a Club Policy on Equality Diversity
  • a Club Childcare Policy
  • your accounting structure
  • your budgeting process

17
Background Information
  • You will need to document
  • the History of the Club
  • the Teams you run, including Junior and Womens
    sections.
  • what success you have had in recent years.
  • the standard of your ground and club house.
  • what you need from the funding and in what ways
it will improve what you have to offer to the
    Local Community.

18
What will the Clubs Commitment Be?
  • It will depend on the scale of your project.
  • Don't venture it alone, make sure that there are
several other members of the club who will be
    committed to the end.
  • Don't expect it to happen overnight. ALL funded
projects take more time than you expect.
  • Expect setbacks on the way!

19
How Do You get Involved?

make sure you have enough support.
