Course Structure

• The course is spilt into 4 units.
• Module 1, 3 and 4 are assessed by portfolio work.
• Module 2 is assessed in an exam.

Unit 1 Science in the Workplace.

• This unit is assessed using 2 reports.
• Health and Safety in school and in the workplace.
  We will take trips to see different workplaces
  and assess the health and safety issues of that
  environment.
• How science is used in industry, what careers you
  can enter with a science background.
• Not all Chemists wear white coats.

We have 4 activities planned for this module so
far (there may be more).

• 1. Visit to Twycross Zoo to assess the Health and
  Safety and discuss
• science careers with employees.
• 2. A St Johns Ambulance first aid course.
• 3. A guest speaker on fire safety.
• 4. A guest speaker on safety in school

Unit 1 Science in the Workplace.

• There will also be many practical activities to
  do for the portfolio work, including growing
  sandwiches!
• It is not all writing!

Unit 2 Science for the needs of society

• This is assessed by 1 exam (probably sat in
  January of Year 11.
• This includes forensic science
• (CSI), medical science,
• manufacturing of raw materials,
• electrical equipment,
• environmental science and
• transport and communication.

We have 4 activities planned for this module so
far (there may be more).

• We are visiting a sports
• car manufacturer, Caterham.
• We have a guest speaker from the Environment
  Agency.
• The Twycross Zoo trip during module 1 will be
  referred to in this section.
• We will investigate pollution by airplanes and
  communication in electronic bus stops.

Unit 3 Developing Scientific Skills

• This is assessed using portfolio work.
• There is a heavy emphasis on doing the
  practical work.
• Your portfolio will include
• investigating a living organism (looking after,
  monitoring and changing it)
• using chemical analysis techniques (More CSI)
• investigating the materials of properties

Unit 4 Using Scientific Skills for the Benefit of
Society

• This unit is assessed through your portfolio.
• You will produce 4 reports
• into the growth or development of a living
  organism
• on the production of a chemical product (probably
  soap)

Unit 4 Using Scientific Skills for the Benefit of
Society

• an example of a mechanical machine used to make
  life easier
• on making an electrical device (for measuring the
  water in my hanging baskets!)

Steps to success

• You will succeed on this course if you
• can meet deadlines regularly
• are enthusiastic about practical work
• can complete written tasks to the best of your
  ability
• perform better in coursework rather than exams
