warmth comes from sunshine 2 from geothermal
heat
solar energy lifts rain clouds
solar energy drives winds
solar energy sparks the photosynthesis in
plants which feed all living things

PHOTOSYNTHESIS
(PUTTING TOGETHER WITH LIGHT)
It is a biochemical process in which PLANTS use
the energy from light to produce food
It is a means by which the energy in sunlight
becomes usable in living things
Carbon dioxide water light energy glucose
oxygen water
Green plants are the only plants that produce
oxygen and make food

Sunlight
SUNLIGHT
The only reliable way to get vitamin D
Vitamin D - produced by your skin in response to
UV radiation from NATURAL SUNLIGHT
Vitamin D - activated by liver and kidneys
before it can be used
Vitamin D - crucial for Calcium absorption
from food Calcium used in building healthy bones
You never get too much vitamin D from sunlight
exposure
(the body knows how much vitamin D to generate)
Too much sun bathing doesn't mean more vitamin
D, it means sunburn (skin damage)

improves sleep!
MELATONIN Is natural body hormone that enhances
sleep, and is produced by pineal gland (in
center of the brain) Optimal production only
at night, in the dark environment Daily
exposure to natural sunlight will boost melatonin
output

tanned skin more resistant to infections and
sunburns than the un-tanned skin - Increases the
number of erythrocytes, leucocytes, platelets -
Allows blood to carry more oxygen - Facilitates
wound healing - Decreases the risk for breast,
colon, prostate cancer

GUIDELINES FOR SAFE EXPOSURE
modest tanning protects your skin (like putting
sunglasses on your skin) understand your own
tolerance to sunlight

MORE GUIDELINES FOR SAFE EXPOSURE
Never, never burn! Wear protective clothing,
eye wear and a protective sunscreen if needed. Be
careful around snow, or water or on cloudy days
A few minutes (15-20) of sunshine on your face
and hands each day will produce all the daily
vitamin D you need in temperate areas
Spend each day soaking up some daylight
Sunscreen lotions may protect against sun
burning, but block vitamin D production by the
skin
